Full ReportAccident 7. -November 14. -Nicholas J. Andrews - a miner working in the 16th level - south of No. 2 shaft; Tamarack mine - lost his life by a large piece of vein rock falling on him. He was engaged in cutting a hitch to put in timber to secure the hanging wall rock when the vein rock fell which caused Andrews death. Charles Waisanen and Mattie Kempanen miners who were working in the stope when the accident occurred testified at the inquest held before Coroner Macdonald as follows: We were ordered by the Mining Captain yesterday that is the day before the accident to drill two holes in the stope and blast them before going to surface but we did not do so. The reason we did not blast as ordered we thought - it would be to our advantage to drill another hole before blasting. - Capt. Thomas Maslin testified. I am uderground Mining Captain of the Tamarack Mine. I gave the miners Charles Waisanen and Mattis Kempanen express orders yesterday to drill two holes in the dangerous piece of ground and blast them. I did not consider the ground safe for men to work under. These men for reasons of their own did not do as they were told. Had they obeyed my orders the accident would not have happened. - After hearing the evidence the jury brought in the following verdict: We find that Nicholas J. Andrews came to his death by a rock falling on him through the neglect of Charles Waisanen and Mattis Kempanen in not carrying out the orders given them by the mining captain.
