- Edenville Pioneer Succumbs Friday Funeral Services were held at the S. D. A. Church in
Edenville Monday for Lemual L. Brown, 81, pioneer Edenville resident who died at his home
there on Friday, April 14th, 1944. Burial was in the Edenville Cemetery. Mr Brown was born
in December of 1862 in Ontario, Canada, and came to Michigan with his parents as a boy of
8. He worked as a blacksmith in the lumber camps here while still in his 'teens. In 1866
he was married to Miss Leona Erway, of Edenville, and they built a home and a blacksmith
shop on the old Erway farm, 1/2 mile east of Edenville, where they have since lived, Mrs.
Brown died in February of 1943. L. L. Brown was a well-known in Gladwin as well as Midland
counties for he did work for farmers from both counties who drove miles to have him shoe
their horses or repair farm implements. Surviving are four sons, Charles of Beaverton;
Shirley, of Detroit; Eber, in the U. S. Navy; and Russell at home; one daughter, Mrs.
Verna Synder, of Los Angeles, California; three brothers, Bert and Delbert, of Flint; and
Charles, of Butler, Wisconsin; and one sister, Mrs. George Cudney, of Coleman. (Gladwin

- Services Thursday for Wm. Shaw Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Hall
funeral Home in Gladwin for William Shaw, 57, well-known Gladwin barber, who died suddenly
at his home here Sunday following a heart attack. Gladwin business places will close from
1:45 p.m. to 3:15 for the services. Mr. Shaw's death Sunday came as a shock to the
hundreds of folks throughout the county who have known and respected him during the more
than 35 years he was engaged in the barber trade in Gladwin. He was in apparent good
health Sunday morning and had planned to go out to Pratt's Lake to look over a 40 acre
plot of land on which he has set out evergreens during the pas few years. At about 11 a.m.
he returned to his home, however, and complained to Mrs. Shaw of shortness of breath. She
immediately went to the Gladwin Hospital to summon Dr. K. D. Coulter. When she returned
home less than five minutes later, he had passed away. "Bill", as he was known
to everyone, was a favorite with young folks as well as old. He had a way with youngsters;
they loved him; and back in the days before rationing, a candy bar went with every
hair-cut at Shaw's. He first started barbering here back in 1906 with Ross Huffman. He
later was associated at different times with William White and Tom Moore in the barber
trade here. In 1930 he opened his own shop in Gladwin with his sons Kenneth and Wilbur.
Wilbur went to work for the Dow Chemical Company in Midland, but Kenneth has continued the
association with his father in the barber shop. The son of Robert and Lucy Shaw, Bill was
born in Mitchell, Ontario, on December 4, 1885. He came to this country in 1906 and
settled in Gladwin. He was married to Harriet Carbeno, of Gladwin, on August 23, 1910.
Surviving are Mrs. Shaw; two sons, Kenneth and Wilbur, of Gladwin; five grandchildren; two
brothers John and Orben of Flint; four sisters, Mrs. Mildred Wall and Mrs. Lola Brabyn,
and Hazel, of Detroit; and Mrs. Mitchell, of Ontario. Bill was an active member of the
Gladwin I O O F Lodge and Encampment. He was a member of the Gladwin County Rationing
Board, and also served as a member of the Gladwin County Draft Board. He was always active
in the affairs of the Gladwin County Fair Association and served several terms on the
Board of Directors. The Rev. Perry Hoover, of the Beaverton Chruch of the Brethern, will
officiate the services Thursday afternoon. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery,
Gladwin. (Gladwin County Record, Gladwin April 14, 1943).

- 1) Cyrus KOONTZ b. 1866 in OH - lived on Wirtz Road - probably came to Gladwin between
1900-1910. I'm trying to find out where he and his sisters and brothers came from
(somewhere in OHIO) and what happened to sisters Dora who married Ross BELLINGER,
Josephine who married Henry WATERS, Nerv who married George BOYLE. Cyrus married Maria
Susanne GREER in 1889 in Gladwin. Son Clarence b. 1891(in Gladwin) worked the farm. 2) He
married Bertha May BRUNNI - daughter of Carl BRUNNI and Sarah Walcutt - they lived in
Gladwin. David J. BRUNNI and Olive Stambaugh of Gladwin were witnesses. Are there any
BRUNNI relatives there? If I knew what church they attended, perhaps I could locate the
information I need. 3) I know nothing about the GREERs except the names of Maria's
parents: John and Mary Sawyer. 4) Joseph WHITE (b. 1857) came from Ontario Canada to
Gladwin - possibly with brothers Thomas, William, Albert, James, Samuel, sister was
Elizabeth. One of Joseph's sons was Everett WHITE. Joseph's wife was Bertha J. Simmons.
I'm looking for other WHITES that are related to Joseph - born in Canada. Brother John
stayed in Kitchener, Ontario - probably some of the others as well. The Koontzes I think
are buried at Ridge Cemetery and Highland Cemetery. Does anyone go there to research? Hope
this isn't too much - but I figured if I linked all these names together, they might ring

- Philomene Plude born about 1848 in Canada. In the 1880 census lived in Gladwin County in
Grout Township with her husband George Page (LePage) and children Emma, Anna and twins
Lilly and Rosa (Rose). She was the sister of Nelson Plude (who died 1915 in Gladwin) and
Mrs Bertrand (who in 1915 lived in Bay City). The 1880 census listed George as a laborer
and farmer. This is about all I know about my gg ggrandparents. Lilly was my g
grandmother. Please help me if you can. I am having trouble finding my family in Michigan
and I am new to genealogy and getting frustrated. Thank you very much in advance. Cheryl

- George Page (LePage) born 1848 in Canada. In the 1880 census he was living in Gladwin
County in GROUT township with his children Anna 6, Emma 3, and twins Lilly and Rosa (Rose)
10 months. George was listed as a farmer and Laborer. His wife's maiden name was Philomene
Plude. Her brother was Nelson Plude who died 1915 and she had a sister named Mrs. Bertrand
who lived in Bay City in 1915. This is all that I know about my gg grandparents in
Gladwin. I know that my g grandmother Lilly talked about Gladwin all the time. She loved

- I am looking for any information on the PALMER, TUCKER, or BLACKBURN families. My
great-grandfather was William Palmer who came from Canada in the early 1900's and married
Alice Anna TUCKER. Alice's mother's maiden name was BLACKBURN. Alice and William married
in 1909. They moved to Midland from Gladwin approx. 1919. They had nine children. William
was killed in an accident in DOW chemical plant in 1938 when he fell into a vat of hot
caustic. Anyone who may be related or even has a tidbit of info. on the family, please let
me know. I also like to offer my assistance in return...I live in Sault. Ste. Marie.,MI.
So anyone who needs assistance here I can try to help...I am an amateur though :) But I

- I am trying to find Alexander Whitmans Father and Mother. But I believe he may have came
from over seas, if there is any other information you can provide on Alexander Whitman
other than the follow: born December 1851 in Germany, and died April 17, 1912 in Grand
Traverse, Michigan, Alexander married Sophrona Hawley of Midland. All I know is that his
obt. was in Gladwin County (which I have) and he was laid to rest in the Highland
Cemetery, Honored memeber of the Free Methodist Church, and moved to Gladwin County in
1898 from Midland and resided for 14 years as a Farmer. Unfortuntly, I have no Information
on his parents. I would greatly appreciate any help you could give me. I have done nothing
but run into brick walls and this is the first time I have felt I might actually get some

- If anybody has information related the Shell family in Gladwin County it would be
greatly appreciated Thomas Henry Shell was born on July 7, 1855 in Worth, Sanilac County,
Michigan. He seems to have spent at least the first twenty-four years of his life as a
farmer in the Sanilac area. He married Beatrice Glendenning on September 27, 189 in
Sanilac County. The 1880 Michigan census shows that he was not living with his parents and
may have moved to Gladwin County shortly after his marriage. The 1900 Michigan census has
Thomas living with his wife, Beatrice, and children, Denis, Mary, William, Thomas, Ray,
Fay, and Cora on the farm in Gladwin. He remained on the farm until his death in 1926.
Thomas and Beatrice had the following children not including four children who died in
infancy; A. Denis D. Shell9 - born in April 1882 B. Mary A. Shell9 - born in March 1884 C.
William H. Shell9 - born in June 1886 D. Thomas Shell9 - born in April 1889 E. Ray Shell9
- born in April 1893 F. Fay Shell9 - born in April 1893 G. Cora E. Shell9 - born in April
1895 H. Carl Shell9 - born on July 21, 1901 in Butman Township. Married Orva Clouse, died
January 6,1991. He is buried in the Crescent Hills, Cemetary in Waterford Township,
Michigan.

- I am looking for information on three brothers and their father. Charles BROOKS was
married to Mary Jane BURNHAM. They lived in Sanilac County, Michigan for a time and then
moved to GLADWIN County, Michigan and possibly Roscommon County, Michigan. Time span would
have been about 1860 forward. Charles and Jane had a son William BROOKS, born about 1843
in Canada. William married 4 times. Second to Jennie BLANEY STEVENS, third to Rosetta
LEVULETTE, and fourth to Emma Jane HEDGERS. All the marriages took place in Gladwin
county, the first one in 1886 and the other two later. Charles and Jane had a son George
A. BROOKS born about 1848 in Canada. He married 4 Mar 1900 Mary E. BROOKS. Charles and
Jane had a son Charles BROOKS, born 3 Jul 1860 in Maple Valley, Sanilac County, Michigan
(or in Canada). Charles married 18 Jun 1883 May Augusta McLARGIN. They were married in
Flynn, Sanilac County, Michigan. The majority of their children were born in Gladwin
County, Michigan. Charles and May are my direct line, but I would like to hear from anyone
who is researching either George or William. I am having trouble tracking my Charles and
therefore am trying to locate the family by tracking George and William. I am sure there
must have been more children in the family. Who were they?
