BEACHVILLE On Thursday, April 12th, there passed away one of our pioneers in the person of James Dickey, in his 86th year, after an illness of about three weeks. He will be greatly missed as he always had a cheery word and in his younger days and until his age hindered him, he was always the first one to help those in trouble and give them a word of cheer. He was a Methodist in religion; a staunch temperance man and in politics a Liberal. He leaves to mourn his loss, three sons, Herbert of Victoria, B.C., Robert of West Oxford, Ernest of New York and one brother, Rev. Nathaniel Dickie, of Michigan. A large concourse of people followed him to his grave. The pallbearers were John Hacker, T. Taylor, J. Warring, Alex McPherson, John McDowning, A. H. Carroll. The Foresters conducted the service at the grave.

Obituary - newspaper and date unknown
1902 written in
This week we are called upon to chronicle the passing from this life to the better life of one of the settlers of what is now known as the Town of Forest, in the person of Robert Richey Dickey, who died after an illness of a little over six weeks. When he was first taken down it was thought that he would soon rally again, but, notwithstanding, all that medical aid and careful nursing could do, he slowly but surely faded away, entering his eternal rest about 8 o'clock on Thursday morning, August 14th. The funeral took place on Saturday, the 16th inst. at 2 p.m., the funeral services being conducted by Rev. J. D. Ford, pastor of the Methodist church of which church deceased was a life long member. The services were held upon the lawn in front of the house. The interment took place at Beechwood Cemetery. The attendance was very large and representative of all denominations and all classes. The business men, out of resprect for the memory of a worthy man, closed their shops during the passing of the funeral cortege to the last resting place. The hearse, containing the remains of the deceased, was preceeded to the cemetery by a carriage containing three of the High School Board, of which deceased had been a member ever since the high school was built, some 12 years age. namely, Dr. A. Scott, Dr. Jas. Hutton, Wm. Sparling and Thos. Preston, the former principal of the High School. Another carriage, containing Malcolm Brodie, W. J. Porte, John W. Bell, Geo. B. Stephenson, and H. Barron, trustees of the Public School, an institution with which deceased was identified for 25 years, being a trustee before ever Forest was incorporated as a village or town, and without interruption until he resigned some 7 or 8 years ago.

R. R. Dickey was born in the County of Antrim, Ireland, in 1833 and was therefore in his 70th year. He came to Canada with his parents in 1845, who settled in the Township of Blanchard, near St. Marys, Ontario. Here he married Rebecca J. Pierce in the year 1858, and there were born to them two sons and two daughthers, George W. of Colorado Springs; Robert, who died some years ago; Rebecca J. now the ife of W. H. Pickering, of Forest, and Lena, now the wife of J. B. Detwiler, of Brantford. Deceased has four brothers who survive him-two brothers and two sisters, deceased. The names of those living are: James, of Beachville; Andrew of Brantford; Rev. Nathaniel of Bell Branch, Mich., and Wm. R. of Ubley, Mich. all of whom were present at the funeral obsequies. In the year 1863, he moved to Forest, when it was little better than a forest of trees. He built a store and carried on a general store and grain buying until 1872, when he retired from mercantile business and opened an office for Fire Insurance, etc. He lost his wife by death in February 1884, and in the fall of 1885 he married Eliza Pierce, who survives him. In 1895 he was appointed a police Magistrat and also about the same time clerk of the 5th Division Court. In both of said offices he has rendered very efficient service and his place will be hard to fill. We have already mentioned his connection with the public and high school; the former for 25 yea4rs and the latter for 12 years. He was a trustee of the first Methodist church, and an active promoter of the building of the church. He was also a trustee of the second church built, and aided liberally in the building of the same. In all interests of the church he stands identified ever since he came to Forest.

It will be hard to find any one person to fill all the important positions which he held at the time of deceased, and much syumpathy is felt and freely expressed for this wife and children, for besides being a good citizen he was a loving husband and a kind and indulgent father. At the funeral wree many relatives besides those mentioned. Amongst the rest were two daughters of Mrs. Dickey, that is to say, Mrs. W. Windlow and Mrs. W. O. Shillington of Chicago; a sister Mrs. Johnson, of London; a brother, Mr. Marryat, of London Township, and a neice, Miss F. Nickol of Denfield.
