Came to Wells Township, Tuscola County, in October, 1865.
Has served as Supervisor seven terms.
Was Township Clerk nine years, Town Treasurer two years and Highway
Commissioner one year. Has been
Assessor of School District No. 2 Fifteen years.
Was married to Miss Rose E. Wilmot in 1871.
Have had six children, all living, two of whom are married.
COTTINGTON,
WM.
Born in Lewiston Township, Niagara County, N. Y. November 28, 1828.
Came to Michigan in 1872 and settled in Wales Township, St. Clair County,
Michigan. Came to Township of
Wells, Tuscola County, in 1888 and bought present farm.
Served as Supervisor three terms. Is
Health Officer at present.
CURRY,
J. S.
Born in the County of Aramagh, Ireland, on July 28, 1837.
Came to Canada when four years old, and lived in Chatham Township, Kent
County, Ontario, for twenty-eight years. Moved
then to Wells Township, Tuscola County, Michigan, and has lived there
twenty-eight years, and been engaged in lumbering and later ran a saw mill. Married in December 1858, to Elizabeth Tong, in Township of
Chatham, Kent County, Ontario, and has seven children, namely, Thomas, James,
Robert, Arthur, John Francis, David Malcolm, William, Russell Smith and Rose
Elizabeth. He has been member
of Board of Review and School Director for twelve years.
GIFFORD,
ALVA
Born in Wells Township, Tuscola County, Michigan, April 11, 1867.
Moved to Ohio in 1873 and resided there twenty-one years in Orange
Township, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, and then moved back to Wells Township, Tuscola
County, in 1894. Was married March
4, 1899, to Bertha Underwood, of Wells Township, and has one child, Linton A.
Has been Township Clerk two terms.
HUFFMAN,
S.
Born in Ontario County, Canada, April 6, 1840.
Came to Michigan in 1858 and settled at North Branch.
Came to Novesta Township in 1869, then moved to Wells Township and
settled on present farm in 1881. Been
Clerk of Novesta Township and Highway Commissioner and also School Director for
twenty-three years, and at present holding that office.
Married September 25, 1868, to Melissa E. Spencer, at North Branch.
Have three children, Edith, Gertrude and Ambrose.
MOE,
J. R.
Born in Waterford, Oakland County, Michigan, February 14, 1847.
Moved to Grant Township, Huron County, Michigan.
Enlisted in 1862 in Company A, Fourth Michigan Cavalry, and served three
years. Was in battle of Stony River
and most important battles of Rosencrans’ campaign; also on March to the Sea
with Sherman, and returned with Thomas; also in Wison’s raid, and assisted in
capture of Jefferson Davis. Returned
to Huron County after the war, moved to Tuscola County in fall of 1896, and
settled in Wells Township. Was
married in 1868 to Hannah J. Church, who died in 1891.
Had six children. Was again
married in 1893 to Mary H. Winton.
SPENCER,
GEORGE L.
Born in Dayton Township, Tuscola County, Michigan, on May 5, 1863.
Moved to Wells Township in 1877. Married
to Sarah Smith in March, 1897. Is
now Town Treasurer. Been School
Inspector and member of Board of Review.
