We visited this cemetery that we had heard about from a friend on June 23, 2002. Located in the Huron National Forest area in Oscoda Co, we went down dirt roads looking for it until we came across a group of homes and stopped to ask if they knew about the cemetery. We only found the following marked graves in a wooded area that was overgrown with obvious other grave depressions. It had one little path that led into the graveyard with no signs marking it as a graveyard. Map of Cemetery layout.
The condition of this cemetery is horrible. It is in a forested area that has grown around it. As you will see graves have caved in in places and there are many unmarked depressions. Baby
Jennie's stone is the only one that has markings that has survived. It is broken from the base and propped back up. Some kind person has taken the time to build a small fence around it and mowed the
path into the cemetery. also flowers have been left at the graves. So people do care about it, but not the people in charge of taking care of it. There is set of graves (2 wooden markers) area that someone has put a wire fence around in the past, but it is now overgrown. The wooden markers are worn and old.
Actually we were looking for a different cemetery in the area that is also abandoned on this trip. That one is on Deeter Rd. and is known as a Native American Burial Ground. A man has been working
on it, clean up etc. He is worried that when he is gone no one will take care of it. We didn't find it yet, as came we set out with no destination and I didn't have my road map at the time. We
came across this one and were amazed. We'll go to the Native American Burial Ground on the next trip this summer. The location of this burial site is: Section 25, Deeter Rd. and County
Rd. 489, Luzerne (mailing address)
This cemetery has been reported to Saving Graves Michigan but never posted on their site. There are other cemetery listings you may be interested in.
