Mrs. L. W. BLISS

Nine weeks ago Dr. and Mrs. L. W. BLISS were thrown from their carriage on Washington avenue and sustained injuries which were at first thought only slight. Mrs. Bliss was bruised considerable about the head and face and her spine was somewhat injured. For a few days she seemed to improve, but erysipelas set in and for the past eight weeks news from the sick room has varied. Dr. Bliss had been hopeful until yesterday morning; then he was obliged to admit to himself that the grave change that was noticed Saturday night about twelve o’clock was probably the last. Through the day yesterday Mrs. Bliss sank slowly, her brain and lungs being most affected. She was conscious, however, part of the time. At 4:25 o’clock this morning, October 3, 1887, death came to her relief, and a useful, noble life was ended here; a soul had passed from labor to reward. Mrs. Bliss, whose maiden name was Harriet E. Granger, was born in New York City, July 3 1828. In 1851 she was married in Albany to the late William M. Miller. Subsequently they lived in Vermont and in 1860 came to Saginaw, where for years Mr. Miller was known as one of the first attorneys. He died in the spring of 1873, and on September 18, 1877, Dr. and Mrs. Bliss were married. During her long residence in Saginaw Mrs. Bliss had always been prominent among those women of solid worth who mold society. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and was always interested in whatever concerned its welfare. Her influence was not confined, however, within her own church, but was felt in all benevolent purposes. She was especially interested in the establishment of the proposed Saginaw hospital, and will be missed most sadly from its board of directors. She leaves one daughter, Mrs. Charles A. Rust.
