Three Volunteers Make Up County’s First Draft Quota

250 Questionnaires Now in Hands Of County’s Registrants

Three Isabella youths left Mt. Pleasant Tuesday to report to Saginaw induction station for Selective Service.  All three men are volunteers and make up Isabella’s first draft quota.

Paul William Esch, 21, Broomfield township, was named leader of the group, which also included Merle Francis Deming, 21, of near Winn and Floyd Louis Prout, 26, northeast of Rosebush.  Esch, as leader, is responsible for transportation and other details concerned with the volunteers registering with the commanding officer at the induction station.

In the event that any of the selectees are rejected upon examination at the induction station, several registrants from here are ready to report at the station according to Lendy Davis, board clerk.  First in line to volunteer, Melvin Roy Atkins, 27, of Weidman.

To date some 250 questionnaires have been sent from the county headquarters here.  Return of the blanks properly filled out is being accomplished with some difficulty according to draft board and advisory board members.  The advisory board which was set up to aid draftees in filling out questionnaires has been overtaxed with requests for assistance.

It is pointed out that the board is intended to function when draftees have some question about filling out the forms.  Many young men, it was said, made no attempt to fill the blanks unaided.

However, when there is doubt as to information required on the blanks, assistance can be obtained from any of the following board members:  Virgil McClintic, 500 South Main; Thomas R. McNamara, Taylor building; James E. Ryan, Commercial block; Lester Orcutt, 508 South Kinney and George B. Keiser, 506 North Main.  McClintic, McNamara and Ryan have requested that all inquiries be made during office hours at the addresses given above, and Orcutt and Keiser prefer that applicants call at their homes after 6 p.m.

This week additional registrants in class 1A, eligible for immediate service, are being called for physical examinations.  Others are receiving notice of classification.  It is required that the county board here shall have 650 men classified by January 1.  These classifications made up to that time hold until May 1941 when all registrants will be reclassified.  Reclassification will take place every six months, according to Mr. Davis.
