ROSES FOR THE LIVING

                                                             John Beutler

We are especially pleased this week to reproduce the picture of a gentleman who all

will readily recognize.

John Beutler was born in 1864.  He came to Sherman Township in 1877 and has resided

on the same farm since that date.  This farm has grown from forty acres that he originally

bought to a farm of three hundred acres.

John’s first team, with which he used to do his farming, was a pair of oxen.  During

the early history of Weidman, when people commenced to talk about horseless carriages,

at a Weidman Day Celebration it was advertised that the Committee would show a horseless

carriage.  This was the means of drawing a larger crowd than usual, people coming many

miles to see a buggy running without being horse drawn.

At the appointed hour there came down the street John Beutler driving a pair of white

oxen hitched to Mr. Weidman’s two seated buggy, and riding in that buggy were Mr.

Weidman, George Drallette, George Middlesworth and Jim Cliff.  While the Committee

made good their word the horseless carriage was not exactly what the Weidman Day crowd

expected to see.

John Beutler does not drive oxen any more.  Very soon after the advent  of the motor

cars, John owned one.  In fact he owned the first car in Sherman Township, a Ford

John has held many Township offices.  In fact, all of them.  He has always had, and still

has the deep respect due a staid and substantial citizen of this County.  He is a pioneer and

knows the hardships of a pioneer life.

John, we are happy to include you in our “Roses for the Living” and we wish you many

happy days to come.
