MT. PLEASANT IN HISTORY

 
 
NO ONE PRESUMES to say who where the earliest inhabitants of Isabella county, although there appear to be evidences that the Mound Builders preceded the "noble red man."
However it is certain that the Ottawas and Chippewas were early settlers of this region. They were both numerous and powerful. In their system of government and internal policy they were separated into several
independent clams or tribes, each ruled by its own distinct chief. These various clams, however, acted together as confederates, whenever the welfare of their nation was menaced by an external invasion.
Until 1763 France had nominal rule over this region, from Quebec to New Orleans, but in that year when a treaty of peace terminated a war between that country and England, the latter was given Canada and Michigan.
At the close of the Revolution, England ceded Michigan and other territory to the United States, and in 1787 it became a part of Northwest Territory.
The first permanent settlement in the state was made it Detroit ill 1701 when Cadillac and 100 followers located at the straits.
The settlements of the state began after the war of 1812 when General Cass disproved the unfavorable reports of Tiffin, in regard to the conditions of tile country for settlers.
After the opening of the Erie canal in 1825 the tide of immigration began to affect all of lower Michigan.
 
1830
The Great Western Stage Co. organized in Detroit. t supplied a line of 4 horse stage coaches for mail and passengers running from Detroit to Chicago, 288 miles, in 5 days - a surprising record at that time.
1831
Isabella county was set off as a separate county.
1853
An act was passed by tile legislature attaching Isabella County to Saginaw County for judicial and legislative purposes.
1855
Treaty with the Indians negotiated. Nearly six townships ceded to them. Each head of a family received 80 acres. To each male or female arriving at the age of maturity 40 acres, with a proviso. If competent a title in fee simple. If incompetent a title cannot be transferred without the consent of the Indian Agent. Isabella County was attached to Midland county.
1857
The first school house was built in Isabella county in Coe township.
1859
First election in county held in April. First official act was to approve bond of the county treasurer, Richard Hoy. The second act was to bond the county for $1500.00 for relief of destitute.
1860
Total population: Indians, 856; whites, 577; total, 1433. Court House was moved to Mt. Pleasant. David Ward built and donated the new Court House.
1863
Harvey and Geo. Morton of N. Y. purchased of David Ward the original plat of ground where the city is located. First hotel built by Mortons, frame construction, 22 rooms.


 
 

1866

A saw mill was built at Mt. Pleasant. 

1872

Indian lands began to be sold to settlers. Harris Bros. built a grist mill and later acquired the saw mill and dismantled the same. 

1875

Nearly every business house was destroyed by fire. Village organized. 

1876

Court House was built. I. A. Fancher, State Senator, obtained a refund from Auditor General of over $10,000.00. This refund and $2,000.00 raised by subscription and $1,000.00 by taxation made the new court house possible. 

1879

Dec. 15, Railroad into Mt. Pleasant was completed. $15,000 bonus and right of way was furnished by city. 

1880

$10,000.00 was voted for a new school house. The trees on court house lawn were planted. 

1882

Waterworks system installed. 

1885

Ann Arbor road reached Mt. Pleasant. 

1888

Gorham Bros. began building a plant for manufacture of fruit baskets. 

1889

A franchise was granted by common council to Mt. Pleasant Electric Company to install an electric light and power plant. Capital stock $25,000. City is lighted by 42 are lights, 42 arc light tungsten lamps, and a few lesser lights. City pays $2375.00 for lights. Sacred Heart School opened with 150 pupils. 

1892

Mt. Pleasant Improvement Co. was organized for purpose of building and equipping a normal school for training rural school teachers. .The corner stone of Normal University was laid – name later changed to Central Normal School and Business Institute.
