Failure to Appear at Call for Mobilization a Grave Military Offense
The work of the physical examination of the 200 men in additional call was completed last Friday. Of this number 44 failed to pass. 73 of the number have not filed claims for exemption. 11 of the men called failed to appear and the names of these were automatically placed on the list certified to the district board for service. If these men or any others fail to put in appearance when the call for mobilization is made they will have committed a grave military offense punishable by court martial. Wilful failure to report with intention to evade military service constitutes desertion, which is an offense in time of war and punishable by death.
All but 20 names of the total of 550 have been passed on by the local board and 252 names have been certified to the district board. Only 184 will be required from this county less any more possible credits for enlistments. If the exemptions accepted by the district Board does not equal or exceed the difference between the number required and the number certified from this county some of those whose names are given in the list published in this issue will not have to go at this time.
In such case the ones whose serial draft numbers are last in the official draft list previously published will be the ones not called now.
