Northwestern Tribune, August 30, 1889

James Campbell

Last Monday morning, arising at about 4 o'clock, Mrs. James Campbell spoke to her husband several times, but receiving no answer, approached the beside and found him gasping for breath and unable to speak.  The family were immediately aroused and a physician sent for, but without avail, dissolution having taken place a few moments after the departure of the messenger.

The deceased was born in Chester county, Pennsylvania, May 1, 1830, and was consequently a little over 59 years of age at his death.  He was reared on a farm and received his education in the public schools.  At the time he attained his majority, he emigrated to Jackson county, this state, where he worked on a farm for two years.  In October 1854, he came to Coe township, being one of the first settlers, and located 240 acres of land, but has since disposed of all but a homestead of 110 acres on which is a substantial residence and commodious farm buildings.

January 18, 1855, Mr. Campbell was married to Miss Euphemia Neely, in Jackson county.  Eight children were the result of the union, two of whom, Hattie and Charlie, are dead.  The remaining ones are Mesdames O. Hutchinson, O. C. Stahlman, L. D. Estee and Irad Struble, and Geo. B and Miss Ella Campbell.

The deceased has had several offices in township and district, and might have had anything in a political way he desired, but was not at all ambitious in that respect although often urged to accept nominations by friends who recognized his through honesty and sterling worth.

News of his sudden and unexpected death was received by friends all over the county, with honest and heartfelt regrets.

Thus has passed away another of the old pioneers of this section, who did so much toward making this one of the finest farming tracts of land in the state.  His friends were legion.  Enemies he had none.  His advice was eagerly sought in life, by both old and young.  His judgment was acknowledged by all to be mature and sound; his honesty and integrity unquestioned.  His word once given was good as his bond.  He was a man in every sense of the word: there are few like him and his is sincerely mourned.

The deceased was a member of the M. E. church, of this village, an earnest Christian, and carried his religion with him in his every day life.

The funeral was held from the residence at 2 o'clock Wednesday, and was one of the largest ever held here.  Many flowers and floral offerings were brought by sorrowing friends, and the remains were lowered to their final resting place, while many a tear coursed down the cheeks of those who seldom give way to such burst of feeling.

Rev. C. W. Smith, of Clare, officiated, assisted by Rev. E. L. Sinclair, and preached a beautiful and appropriate funeral sermon.

House-Trailer Knocked to Bits

Neil Campbell and Alvin Kullman Die as Two Companions are Hurt

Two Mt. Pleasant youths were killed and two companions injured when the sedan in which they were riding at high speed crashed into a house-trailer on US-27 highway just south of the city limits at 6:15 p.m. Thursday night.

Neil B. Campbell, 19, son of Mrs. Rose Campbell, 211 North Lansing, the driver, who died instantly.

Alvin E. Kullman, 20, son of Mrs. Leroy Kullman, 1409 Upton, who died while being rushed by ambulance to the hospital.

The two injured youths were Robert Honeywell, 19, R-5, son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Honeywell; and Michael Gibson, Jr., 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Gibson, 1303 West Lyons.

Gibson was released from Central Michigan Community Hospital after first aid.  Honeywell, who was riding in the rear seat of Campbell's car with Gibson, suffered head and body injuries and a possible leg fracture.  His condition was reported fair at the hospital.

Benjamin L. Vanderlyn, 67, of Houghton Lake, driver of the car pulling the house-trailer, and his wife, Ruby, 63, were not injured.

State police said the four youths were returning home after driving to Hemlock to view the automobile wrecked Wednesday evening in which Mrs. Ethel Cross, 26 year old mother, was killed.

Police theorized that Campbell had hit the trailer at high speed - 80 miles an hour - from the rear after starting to pass and then pulled back into the lane as another car approached.  The trailer was literally "exploded" into bits, with debris strung some 500 feet down he pavement.  The Vanderlyns pulled their car to a stop just short of the south drive entrance into the Hotel Chieftain.  But Campbell's car, after hitting the trailer, apparently sideswiped the other automobile and then careened to the opposite side of the pavement, rolled over once or more, across a ditch and slammed into a tree.  It was a mass of wreckage, trapping Campbell's body.

Gibson and Honeywell were able to leave the wreckage without assistance.  Police and ambulance aides removed Kullman but he died enroute to the hospital with head and body injuries.

Both Kullman and Campbell were outstanding athletes in their high schools.  Kullman was an all-conference tackle for two years on the Mt. Pleasant high school Oilers.  Campbell played regular guard on the undefeated Academy team.  Both had been doing oil refinery and oil field work since graduation.

The accident brought the first traffic fatalities in the county in 1953.  Twenty persons were killed in traffic in the county in 1952.

It marked the second recent fatal accident in the area but just feet or yards outside the corporate limits.  There have been no fatal accidents inside the city limits in two years.

The impact of the vehicles was placed nearly in front of the Assmann Glass Co. store at 3798 South Mission.  This is 240 feet south of the city limits and 420 feet south of the south drive into the hotel.  The Campbell car came to rest, on its side, nearly 400 feet from the impact point, officers said.

Debris of the house-trailer, its contents were strewn across the pavement for more than 400 feet.

Vanderlyn said he and his wife were returning to their Houghton Lake home after spending since last October in Florida.  They had gone there for his wife's health.

Vanderlyn told officers he had $1,700 in Savings bonds and over $300 in bills and silver in the trailer.  Most of it had been recovered early today, police said.  All but one $50 bond was found in the litter but most of the cash, in silver, was still missing.  Only one of the couple's two Persian cats could be located after the crash.  It was unhurt.

The trailer frame and bed were relatively undamaged with the house (home built) turned to kindling wood.  Vanderlyn's car was damaged to only a small extent.

Vanderlyn and his wife went on to Houghton Lake a few hours after the accident.  They had earlier told police that they were going about 20 miles an hour as they entered the city.

Harold C. Franke, 31, of R-2, Shepherd, told police that he passed the accident "just as it happened" and that pieces of the flying debris hit his car, causing some damages.

The accident backed up traffic several hundred feet until state and city police could restore order.  A pelting rain and stiff wind made rescue operations difficult.

Volunteers helped officers clear the debris of the house-trailer from the pavement.

Neil B. Campbell was born May 9, 1933, in Mt. Pleasant and was graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in June, 1951.  Solemn Requiem High Mass will be sung at Sacred Heart church at 10 a.m. Monday.  Rosary services will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday in Rush Funeral home.  Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.

He had been employed as a truck loader at Roosevelt Oil and Refining Corporation.

Surviving Campbell are his mother, Mrs. Rose Campbell, of 211 North Lansing; five sisters, Mrs. Margaret Smiley, Mrs. Mary Katherine Duhamel and Mrs. Charlotte LaPointe, all of Mt. Pleasant; Mrs. Marion Tope of Saginaw and Dorothy Campbell of Lansing; and two brothers, Robert J. of Bay City and Charles of Mt. Pleasant.  His father preceded him in death 15 years ago.

Area Resident, 79, Killed in Accident

Cars Collide West of City on Michigan 20

Isabella County recorded its fifth traffic fatality of the year this morning, shortly after 10 o'clock.  Russell E. Campbell, 79, of Rt. 5, Mt. Pleasant, was pronounced dead on arrival at Central Michigan Community Hospital by Dr. Lionel Davis.

The accident occurred in front of McIntosh's Orchards on west M-20, three-tenths of a mile east of Vandecar Rd.

The driver of the other car, Edward H. Kowaleski, 47, of Box 158, Remus, received a bloody nose, and sought private treatment.  Troopers said he is a physician, and added that he was probably saved from extensive injuries because of the use of his seat belt.

Troopers said Campbell, who was traveling west on M-20, stopped and started to make a left turn into the orchard.  Kowaleski told troopers he was traveling between 60-65 miles per hour, and headed east on M-20, when he came to the slight rise in the road where the accident occurred.

Although his car was considered a total wreck, troopers said there were no visible signs of injury o the victim.  Doctors at Central Michigan Community Hospital have scheduled a post-mortem for this afternoon, to ascertain if Campbell died of injuries in the accident, or if he was the victim of a possible heart attack.  Kowaleski's car was also demolished.

Leaps to Death While Insane

   W. D. Campbell, a resident of Farwell, Michigan, dove headlong through a second story window in the Spaulding and Co., building in St. Johns one morning recently and fell to the cement sidewalk below sustaining injuries which resulted in his death a few hours later.  The man had been suffering with an unbalanced mind for some time past, and a sudden attack of his ailment is the only explanation that relatives can give for his rash act.
