Nottawa Township School Census Lists

Survey Map of Nottawa Township, Isabella County

Nottawa Township was incorporated in 1875.  School Boards began to be established in 1877. By 1909 six (6) districts were established.

District One, post office Weidman, or the Weidman School, was established in 1898.  By 1922, this district also included part of Sherman Township, which made it a fractional district residing in Nottawa Township proper,  Weidman.

District Two, post office Weidman, or the Beal City School, also known variously as Beal City School, Section 16.

District Three, post office Rosebush, or the Hauck-Dibble School, Section 13.

District Four, post office Rosebush, or Theisen/Martin, and Lawrens South.

District Five, post office Farwell, or the Hill Crest Hyslop School, Section 3.

District Six, post office Weidman, or the Yuncker Bellows School.

The township clerk was required by law (Section 5694 of Compiled Laws, as amended in 1909) to file an annual report of the school districts to the state school administrator (Superintendent of Public Instruction).  This was to be made on the first Monday in August.  Three copies of the reports were made, one kept by the township clerk, and two sent to the state school administrator.
The law required that the census be furnished to the township clerk with the enumerator or director's report a listing of the names and ages of children included in the school census along with the names and addresses of parents or guardians, verified by the affidavit of the person taking the census.  Districts received no state funds unless the lists were provided.

The following lists were extracted from the original documents held by the township clerk.  Some years are complete for all districts, some are not.
