HISTORY OF THE MT. PLEASANT AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Some community citizens attempting to save the North Main Street Pere Marquette Train Depot in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, from demolition, established the Mount Pleasant Area Historical Society, Inc, (MPAHS) in 1987. That attempt failed, but in the aftermath grew an organization dedicated to preserving the unique heritage of Mount Pleasant and its surrounding area.
The Society's fundamental goal is to educate and to collect any material, which may help to record or illustrate the history of the region including the arts, sciences, education, agriculture, manufacturers, trade, transportation, and progress in the growth of the population.

For some years after formation, the Mount Pleasant Area Historical Society was involved in numerous community projects such as Christmas House Walks, Old Fashioned Ice Cream Socials, an annual "Jumble Sale", a quilt raffle, parades, and vintage fashion shows. The organization sponsored a historically accurate re-creation of a 1930's wedding, has worked with Central Michigan University on several of its 1992 Centennial projects and with the City of Mt. Pleasant on its 1989 Centennial.

Declining and aging membership have abbreviated the Society’s activities of late but 2011 marks a change in direction toward more planned activities and emphasis on raising the  MPAHS profile in the community.
In recent years, the Society was active in the celebration of Isabella County’s 150th Anniversary Sesquicentennial Celebration on Founders day (February 11, 2009) and throughout the year 2009.

The Society  revived the tradition of an annual celebration of Isabella County Founder’s Day with a celebration on the Saturday closest to the actual anniversary of the organization of Isabella County, February 11th (1859) in 2012.
