Twelve Youths Make Up County’s February Call

Contingent for Third Draft Call Leaves Wednesday, February 12

Isabella County Times-News, Thursday, February 6, 1941

Names of twelve Isabella county youths who have volunteered for selective service and will make up the county’s third draft call were announced this week by County Draft Board officials.  The contingent is to leave here Wednesday, February 12, for Saginaw Induction station.

In the group are five Mt. Pleasant youths: Kenneth Hall, 27, 1016 South Main; Dale Moeller, 23, 613 South Main; John Bardaville, 22, 700 East Gaylord; Louis Foubare, 22, Keeler Union; Dalton Morgan, 24, 201 Leaton.  Others are: John Beltinck, 21, R2, Mt. Pleasant; Jacob Pyrett, 22, R5, Mt. Pleasant; Joseph Pyrett, 25, R5, Mt. Pleasant; John Scott, 32, R3, Clare, Edward Craven, 23, R1, Blanchard; Charles Humphrey, 28, R2, Shepherd; Murray Van Liew, 24, R4, Shepherd.

Volunteer Harold Hunt, 27, 625 East Michigan, has been selected to go with the group as a replacement for one selectee who was rejected in the last contingent.

The draft board here was notified Wednesday of the enlistment in the air corps of a former resident.  Calvin Brumfield, 25, formerly of 405 North Franklin, now of Hamlin, West Virginia.  Brumfield has signed for a three year enlistment.  He is now stationed at Kelly Field, Texas.

To date sixty young men have volunteered for service with the Isabella draft board, officials said.  Of these 55 are registrants and five were under age – October 16, national registrant date.  Already in service are 18 of the volunteers.  Twelve will enter service February 12.  Thirteen are awaiting final physical check-ups to qualify for service.  Eleven have been disqualified for service because of physical defects and six qualified forl imited service.

The extremely low ratio of eligibles to registrants here is interesting.  Of 507 registrants who have been classified as to eligibility for service, only 32 to date, have qualified for immediate service.  Of these 20 are already in service and the other 12 will leave Wednesday to report for duty.  Thirteen other volunteers may fall in the top classification.

More than 80 per cent of Isabella registrants classified so far enter deferred service classification because of dependents.  Of the 507 classified, 417 have dependents.  Twenty-five are in classification 4F, least eligible for service.

Twenty are in service.  Fourteen are in class 1B, eligible for limited service; 14 are aliens, class 4C; three are employed in necessary positions, class 2A, one is in class 4D, the ministry, and one is a “conscientious objector”, class 4E.

Forty-one Indians and 14 colored persons have been classified.  There are 3148 registrants with the local draft board.  Of these 1035 have received questionnaires.
