Full ReportAccident 2 occurred December 11 1894 in the Quincy Mine. Joseph H. Barlace and Tim Leary were working in the drift at the 32nd level north of No. 2 shaft. They had fired two rounds of holes and one of the holes in the second round had missed fire. They went back into the drift to recharge the hole that had missed fire. The drift at the time being full of smoke Barlace told his partner Leary to go back and turn on the air to clear the smoke out of the drift. Leary did so and while he was gone an explosion took place. It was at first supposed that the missed hole had gone off but upon investigation it was found that the explosion was due to some powder that was lying in the bottom of the drift. Barlace received the full force of the explosion from his feet to the lower part of his body on the right side. His face and the upper part of his body were not injured. Barlace died from the effects of the injury and though conscious for some time gave no explanation as to how the accident occurred. There is no doubt but that the blast was premature. An inquest was held before Justice Finn at the Village of Hancock. The jury returned the following verdict: That Joseph H. Barlace came to his death on the 11th day of December 1894 in the Quincy mine by an accidental explosion in the 32nd Level north of No. 2 shaft.
