Mrs. Anna Manwaring, Adeblue, 74, passed away March
7 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ida Shamel, in Millington, after an illness
of several years. Mrs; Adeblue was born on Nov. 22, 1880, in Canada, and came
with her parents to Hamilton township, Clare county, where she spent the rest
of her life.
She is survived by three sons, Charles, of Clare
county, Joseph, of Portland, Ore., and Edward, of Lapeer county; a daughter,.
Mrs. Ida Shamel, of Millington; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and a
sister-in-law, Mrs. Ida Needham, of Chicago.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at
2 o'clock, at. the Miner Funeral Home, with Elder David Bailey officiating.
Burial will be in Grout cemetery. The pallbearers will be Mortimer Shea Jr.,
Ernest Zelt, Mark McKenna, Andrew Keysor, Noel Switzer and Cloyd Switzer.

Mrs.
Charles Adelblue met an accidental death Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 22, when
she was returning from McKenna's store with a horse and a buggy with two small
children. Mrs. Adelblue fell throwing out the baby which she was holding. She
was found with her head between wheel and shaft with throat resting on axle and
had strangled to death. The little girl who was sitting on the seat was
uninjured. The baby is convalescing.
Minnie
Pearl Hersee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hersee, was born in Grout
township and was 31 years, one month and 17 days old. She is survived by her husband, Chas.
Adelblue, and two children, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hersee, two
sisters, Mrs. Dennis McGuire and Mrs. Prank Hilliker of Bay City.
Services
were held at the home Sept. 23, followed by interment in South Grout cemetery.

A. Aldrich, 79, of Beaverton, died Monday, April 29, 1996 at her home. Born
July 1, 1916 in Lyons, she moved to Beaverton in the spring of 1959 from
Wheeler. Mrs. Aldrich loved to grow flowers. The former Bessie Winright married
Howard Aldrich Dec. 24, 1937 in Lyons.
Besides
her husband, she is survived by 6 children, Patricia and Vern Simons of Big
Sandy, Tenn., Marilyn and Billy Macklem of Gladwin, Steven and Ruth Aldrich of

P. Ballard, 89, of Gladwin, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 1995 at MidMichlgan Regional
Medical Center - Gladwin. Born March 25, 1906 in Grout Township, he lived and
worked in Flint for a number of years as an operating engineer. Mr. Ballard moved
back to Gladwin in 1945 and worked in the construction field and fanned. He was
a member of the Gladwin First United Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge of
Byron.
He
married the former Edna Pinnell July 27, 1929 in Flint. Besides his wife, he is
survived by 3 sons, Paul and wife Eunice of Gladwin, Donald and wife Darlene of
Birch Run, and Robert and wife Verna of Coleman; 3 daughters, Geneva and
husband Delbert Boakes of Gladwin, Peggy and husband Jack Cameron of Gladwin,
and Donna Benchley of Beaverton; one brother, Phillip of Gaines; 23
grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2
sisters, one brother and one son-in-law, Daniel Benchley.

illness. She was born in Gladwin County on Sept 12, 1920. She spent about 20
years in Flint and moved back to Gladwin County in 1969. She was a member of
the Gladwin County V.F.W.
The
former Eileen Willford, she was married Noah Baning Aug. 8, 1942 in Gladwin. He
preceded her in death April 2, 1991.
Surviving
are one son, Noah Jr. of Gladwin; one daughter, Virginia Gordon of Gladwin; one
brother, Gordon Willford of Gladwin; 2 sisters, Florence Adams of Gladwin and
Dorothy Martin of Florida; 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded
in death by a brother, Thomas Willford.

Noah F. Baning, 80, of 5197 Buzzell Rd., Gladwin,
died Tuesday. April 2, 1991, in the Veterans Administration Hospital, Saginaw,
after a short illness. Born in Bentley, Aug. 28, 1910, he left the area and
moved back from Flint in 1970. Mr. Baning lived and farmed in Grout Township for
20 years. He was employed by AC Spark Plug of Flint. Mr. Baning was a member of
the Gladwin County VFW Post 7303 and the DAV.
Mr. Baning and the former Eileen Willford were
married Aug. 8, 1942, in Gladwin. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son,
Noah Jr.of Flint; one daughter, Virginia Gordon of Gladwin; 6 grandchildren and
4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 3 sisters and 2 brothers.
Services were held Friday at 1 p.m at the
Sisson-Mathews Funeral Home.The Rev. Carl Briggs officiated and burial was in
the Grout Township Cemetery. Committal services were conduced by the VFW post.

man fatally hurt in head-on crash
A
49-year-old Beaverton man was fatally injured in a head-on collision on M-18 at
the cutoff to M-61 in the city of Gladwin Saturday afternoon.
Daniel
Benchley of 2695 S. M- 18 was pronounced dead on arrival at Gladwin Area
Hospital. He was a passenger in a car driven by his son, Roger Benchley, 30,
also of Beaverton. The younger Benchley was, listed in fair condition at the
Midland Hospital Center Monday with a broken right leg and bruised chest.
Gladwin
City Police said Benchley was rounding the curve and heading south on M-18
about 12:40 p.m. when his sub-compact car collided head-on with a pickup driven
by William Zimmer, 21, of Midland. Zimmer was heading north on M-18 and
apparently crossed the centerline while trying to get to the cutoff to M- 61,
authorities said. The mishap occurred approximately 300 feet north of
Chatterton St. Zimmer was treated for minor injuries at Gladwin Area Hospital and
released.
The
Beaverton Fire Department was called with its "jaws of life" to
remove the elder Benchley from the vehicle. It took emergency personnel over an
hour to free the victim. Also assisting were the Gladwin Rural- Urban Fire
Department, which washed down a gas spill, Gladwin State Police, Gladwin
Sheriffs officers and the Gladwin Emergency Medical Services.
No
tickets or charges have yet been issued and police said the accident remains
under investigation. Benchley is the fourth traffic fatality of the year in the
county, and this is the first fatal traffic mishap in the city of Gladwin since

R. Benchley, 49, of 2695 S. M-18, Beaverton, died suddenly Saturday, Nov. 8, of
injuries received in an automobile accident on S. M-18, in Gladwin.
Born
in Clare April 1, 1937, he had lived in Gladwin County 32 years. Mr. Benchley
was a welder for Local 85 and a member of the Gladwin Assembly of God Church. Mr.
Benchley and the former Donna Ballard were married Aug. 7, 1954, in Gladwin. Besides
his wife, he is survived by 2 sons, Roger of Beaverton and Michael of
Bloomington, 111.; 3 daughters, Mrs. Harry (Linda) Coney and Mrs. Mark (Kathy) Murphy
of Beaverton and Mrs. Dana (Tina) Lundquist of Gladwin; his mother, Mrs.
Mildred Benchley of Coleman; 10 brothers, Miles, Revey, Bernard and Floyd of
Clare, Elmer of Marion, Paul of Bay City, Bob of New York, Tommy of Florida,
Ken of Gladwin and Don of Standish; 4 sisters, Dorothy Cameron of Coleman,

10, in the Midland Hospital following a short illness. Born in Grout Township

Gladwin High School in 1926 and attended

Arbor College for a year and Central Michigan University for a year.
Mrs.
Bosworth taught school for 30 years in Gladwin and Clare counties. She was a
member
of the Gladwin Free Methodist Church and the Gladwin County Farm Bureau.
The
former Mabel Shearer, she was married to Orren Bosworth on November 23, 1939,
in Gladwin.

her husband, she is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. Karl (Ruth) Benson of
Danville, Ky. and Mrs. Allen (Joann) Dow of Davison; 2 sisters, Mrs. Edna Edick

Midland
Hospital
Center after a long illness. Born in Kenton, Ohio, Dec. 19, 1914, he had spent
most of his life in Gladwin County. He farmed, was a justice of peace in Grout
Township and taught Sunday School for 50 years. Mr. Bosworth held offices in
the Gladwin Free Methodist Church and the Gladwin County Farm Bureau.
He
and the former Mabel Shearer were married Nov. 23, 1939, in Gladwin. She died
July 10, 1977. Mr. Bosworth then married Ona Scott July 22, 1978 in Spring Arbor.
Surviving besides his wife, are 2 daughters, Mrs. Karl (Ruth) Benson of
Danville, Ky. and Mrs. Allen (Joann) Dow of Davison; 2 stepsons, Douglas Scott
of Mesa, Ariz. and Dennis Scott of Holland; one step-daughter, Sally Scott of
Lansing; 3 brothers, Henry of Gladstone, James of Spring Arbor and Paul of
Flint; one sister, Doris Cotton of Birch Run; 2 grandchildren and 12
step-grandchildren. A brother, Norman and a step-son, Donald Scott, preceded
him in death.

Medical Center, Zephyrhills, after a long illness. Born in Pennsylvania Aug.
22, 1899, he moved to Giadwin County from Flint in 1946 In 1965, Mr. Brant left
the county and then moved to Florida in 1974. He served on the Gladwin County Road
Commission until retiring in 1964.
Mr,
Brant and the former Ethel (Norton) Decker were married Oct. 6, 1944, in
Angola, Ind. She preceded him in death Feb. 6, 1972. Surviving are a step-son,
Ernest Decker of N. Ft. Myers, Fla. A brother, Clarence, and a sister, Velma
Jupe, also preceded him in death.

Brown died at the residence of his son-in-law, James N. Bendle, in Sage
township, Feb. 12, 1894; aged 83 years, 2 months and 4 days. Mr. Brown was born
in the state of New York, and removed to Ohio in the year 1814. He was joined
in marriage with Margaret Parsons in 1835, in Athens county, O., and they
removed to Michigan in 1878. His wife died in this county in 1880. Twelve
children were born as a result of this union, seven of whom are living, Riley a
son, and Mrs. J. N. Bendle, a daughter, residing in this county. Gladwin County

Brown of Grout died at 7:30 Sunday morning after a long illness, from which he
had been a great sufferer. Mr. Brown was
highly respected and esteemed by all who knew him and leaves a host of friends.

was a member of the Gladwin County VFW Auxiliary No 7303 and th e F .O .E. Auxiliary
No. 1583 in Boyne City. The former Piccola Hund, she was married to Wilber
Brown on February 18, 1940, in Beaverton.

Burgess was born in Ontario, Jan. 17, 1854, and died at his home in Buckeye
township March 7, 1917, aged 63 years, 1 month and 21 days.
In
1878 he was married to Phoebe Steinhoff and in 1881 they moved to Sanilac
county, this state. Eleven years later they moved to Butman township, Gladwin
county, where they lived until one month ago, when they move to their present
home.
Besides
his wife he leaves to mourn his loss, two daughters, Mrs. Charles Small and
Mrs. Addie Gill of Gladwin; three sons, Roy and Ezra, of Gladwin, and Harry D.
Burgess of Detroit; and two brothers and two sisters living in Canada. Funeral
services were conducted by Rev. J. H. Cornelius Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock

services were held in the M. E. Church at Grout Tuesday followed by interment
in South Grout cemetery. She has lived nearly all her life at Sugar Rapids

Buzzell, an old resident of Grout township, died Dec. 5, at the home of his
grandson, Freeman Buzzell, four miles west of Gladwin, and was 81 years, 9
months and 2 days old. Mr. Buzzell was born March 4, 1848, at
In 1879 he came to Gladwin county and
located on a farm in Grout township, which he cleared and improved, and he
became one of the substantial and reliable farmers of his locality, living on
this farm until his death. The esteem in which this man was held was shown by
the large congregation of friends who gathered for the last rites.
He survived by this three sons, mentioned
above, 11 grandchildren and eight grandchildren. Services were held Dec. 9 at the
West Grout Free Methodist church conducted by Rev. G. W. Mustard. The body was

Josephine Forey was born Jan. 30, 1824 in
Port Ryesie, Ont., and departed this life March 9, 1909, at her home in Grout
township, Gladwin county,
She leaves besides her own children,
thirthy-one grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren who mourn her
loss. She was converted when 20 years of age, and united with the New
Connection Methodists, then a flourishing society in Ontario, but in later
years, when this church society became absorbed in others, she worked in any
church that was handy, until declining strength compelled her to cease all
outside activity. As a worker among the sick none excelled her. Her love for
humanity sent her out to minister to the afflicted, and many a life was spared
through her ready ministrations. "Grandma" was well-known for her
skil in restoratives, and as "we reap the crop we sow," so she reaped
and abundant harvest of loving care from relatives and friends in her last
sickness, that soothed her in her last hours.
Funeral services were held Friday at 1 p.m.
at the West Grout M. E. church conducted by Rev. H. J. Nicholls, followed by

Isaac Conner died at the home of his son,
Will Conner, in Arthur township, June 1, of bronchial asthma. Mr. Conner was
one of the first to settle in Grout township, where he cleared a farm and
reared a family. He leaves a number of children. For many years he was one of
the most prominent figures in the new county, but of late the infirmities of

After an illness of about years of bronchial
asthma, Isaac Connor of Nester Dam, peacefully passed from this earth to the
great beyond Monday evening, June 1, at the age of 81 years, 6 months, 3 days.
The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon following. Rev. F. H. Bailey spoke
words of comfort to the sorrowing friends and he was laid to rest in South
Grout cemetery beside a loving wife who departed this life about eight years
ago.

Michigan and located in Grout, Gladwin county, until the the death of his wife,
eight years ago, broke up their home, and he came to live with his son William
of Nester Dam in Clare county where he since resided until his death. He was a
kind and indulgent father and a good neighbor and will be greatly missed by all
who knew him.

Another
pioneer has gone. This time death has called Laura Brown, wife of Isaac Conner,
of Grout, who departed this life Sunday morning, May 27, aged 72 years and 9
months. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, and the remains were
interred in the Grout cemetery. Rev. J. S. DeLong conducted the services.
Mrs.
Conner was born in Canada where she was married to Isaac Conner 53 years ago.
Together with their family they moved to Gladwin county 28 years ago, where
they have since resided. Her husband and seven children remain to mourn the
loss of a faithful wife and devoted mother. The living children are Mrs. M. T.
Matthews, of Oregon, Mrs. Rhoda Fouch, of Grout, Mrs. Joseph Cleary, of
Wyoming, Mrs. Irwin Inman, of Hope, Mrs. F. Wood, of Arthur, and sons Phillip
and William.
For
many years she had been an exemplary member of the M. E. church, adn died happy
in her faith. She enjoyed the respect and esteem of a large circle of friends

William N. Conner, a former resident of Grout
township died Sunday, October 20, after being ill in the hospital for the past
month. William Conner was born in Grout township, January 31, 1873, and was
married to Elvira Shearer July 9, 1899, who died in May, 1900. In February 1907
he was married to Hazel Shaver and to them were born six children, three of
whom died in infancy. Mr. Connor moved to Arthur township, Clare county in 1898
and has resided there.

Boy Is Killed on Bicycle
A seven-year-old Grout Township youth was killed
Saturday afternoon when he rode his bicycle into the path of a car. The
youngster, Stanley K. Councell, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Councell, of
1899 McCulloch Road, Gladwin Sheriff’s officers said. The fatal accident occurred when Stanley
apparently rode his bike out of the driveway at the Lyle Parker home and
collided with a car operated by David E. Carbeno, 18, of Gladwin, they said. Carbeno
told deputies he was traveling west on Parker Road when all of a sudden the boy
was in his path and he could not avoid hitting the youth.
Stanley was the third traffic fatality in the county
this year. He was born on October 3, 1961, in Ferndale, and was a first grade student
at Gladwin.
Besides his parents, he is survived by two brothers,
Douglas in the Army at Ft. Knox, Ky. , and Phillip at home: two sisters, Francine
and Lois, both at home; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Councell, of
Gladwin, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry S. Moomaw, of West Palm Beach, Fla.
Services were held Tuesday at 1:30 p. m. from the

1969. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, and a member of
the V.F.W. Post 7303. He married the former Jan Jasmund in Lake Orion on July
12, 1946.
Survivors
include his wife of Gladwin; one sister, Evelyn Lewis, of Portage-De-Sioux,
Mo.; 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a
daughter, Juanita Gall Morehouse in 1968; and 6 brothers and sisters.

were held Saturday, June 4, at 2 p,m., from Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel.

DeBolt, 87, of Gladwin, died Tuesday, March 21, 1995 at MidMichigan Regional Medical
Center - Gladwin. Born March 15,1908 in Paulskoi, Russia, she came to the United
States at the age of 4. The former Katherine Meyer married Russell DeBolt Sr.
Sept. 21, 1935 in Saginaw. They moved to Gladwin County in 1947. Mrs. DeBolt
was an avid bingo player and attended the Church of Daniels Band.
Besides
her husband, she is survived by 2 sons, Russell Jr. and wife Sharon of
Kalkaska, and Duane and wife Dianna of Gladwin; 2 daughters, Kay and husband James
McMillan of Saginaw, and Jennette and husband John Govitz of Gladwin; one sister,
Lydia Cameron of Midland; one stepsister, Martha Erzen of Saginaw; 11
grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
Services
were held at 11 a.m. Friday from the Sisson Funeral Home in Gladwin with the
Rev. Duane Koontz officiating. Burial was in the Grout Township Cemetery,

R. DeBolt Sr., 87, of Gladwin, died Friday, June 25, 1999 at MidMichigan
Medical Center-Midland. Born March 10, 1912 in Saginaw, he was the son of Fred and
Jeannette Gowing DeBolt.
He
and his wife came to Gladwin in April 1947 from Saginaw. Russell married
Katherine Meyer, Sept. 21,1935 in Saginaw. She preceded him in death March
21,1995.
He
retired from The Dow Chemical Company in 1969. He also worked with his brother,
DeBolt Builders, from 1964 to 1989. Russell was an avid bowler, being entered
into the Beaverton Hall of Fame. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golf,
and was a member of The Gladwin Eagles #3292.
Surviving
are two sons, Russell and wife Sharon of Kalkaska, and Duane and wife Dianna of
Gladwin; two daughters, Kay and husband James McMillan of Saginaw, and
Jeannette and husband John Govitz of Gladwin; one brother, Esley K. of Orlando,
Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by one sister, and one son.

Gladwin, died Sunday, Dec. 28, in the Gladwin Area Hospital after a long
illness. Born in Oklahoma Sept. 29, 1939, she came to Gladwin County in 1962.
She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church.
The former Mattie Tull, she was married to Karl Demankowski
in 1961. Besides her husband, she is survived by 2 sons, Tom of Flint and
Charles, at home; 3 daughters, Karla of Troy, Carrolyn and Heather, at home; her
mother and step-father, Ardie and Robert Andrews of Troy; and 2 brothers,
Charles Tull of Detroit and Tom Andrews of Washington.
Services were held today, Wednesday, at 1 p.m. from
the Sisson-Mathews Funeral Home. The Rev. Donald Dehgler officiated and burial

OF A PIONEER
James Dolloff, an old resident, well-known
in Grout township, died Sunday in his 71st year, from immediate effects of a
stroke of paralysis. Mr. Dolloff was born at Conway, N. H., where he resided
until 1820. He removed to Maine in 1842, where he married Miss Arie Edna Lyford
to whom were born two daughters, Helen and Martha, the former becoming the wife
of Oscar R. Dow, of Grout, and the latter the wife of David Marshal, of
Saginaw. In 1863 Mr. Dolloff and family removed to
Mr. Dolloff was a man of strict integrity
and liberal views, and possessed of a large grasp of matters and things.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. P. D. Huff at the Grout school house

county. He served in the Philippine war, and was perhaps 50 years old. He

in Bad Axe. Mrs. Dow is well-known in Gladwin, where she lived until five years
ago when her husband was hurt in an auto accident and they moved to the
southern part of the state to live with their son, Bert L. Dow.

Edward J. Dunn, 31 of Grout township, was
dead Sunday, the victim of a hit-run driver. His body was found just west of
the
Sheriff McGuire and state police from the
West Branch headquarters have been working on the cas. No arrest has been made
and there are apparently no clues to the identity of the hit-run driver. A
live-long resident of Grout township, Edward Dunn was born August 13, 1904. He
attended the schools in districts number one and two, Grout township.
Surviving him are his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
George Dunn; three brothers, James, of Bourret township, and Daniel and George,
of Grout township. His only sister, Laura, died in 1919. Funeral services were
held this afternoon at two o'clock at the Methodist Epicopal church, preceded
by a prayer service at the home. Rev. Grant L. Jordan officiated. Burial was at

Midland following a brief illness. Bom Oct. 25, 1917 in Montrose to Darrel and
Mary Blake Edick, Basil came to Gladwin County in 1932. He served his country
in WWII and he married the former Edna Shearer May 12,1942 in Gladwin. Basil
drove a school bus for many years and was also a mechanic. He was a member of
the Gladwin Free Methodist Church.
Surviving
are his wife, Edna, one daughter, Kay and husband Terry Foor of Ft. Wayne,
Ind.; one granddaughter, Michelle and husband Patrick Proctor of Ft. Wayne,
Ind. He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

were held at Rogers Funeral Home Wednesday at 2 p.m. for Mrs. Adele Ferrell,
pioneer Gladwin county resident, who died at the home of her daughter in Battle
Creek Sunday. Mrs. Ferrell was 81 years old. Born in Schleswig-Holstein on
February 25, 1859, the daughter of William and Marie Schoof, she came to this
country in 1882 settling near Plymouth, Michigan. In 1883 she came to Gladwin
county to keep house for her two brothers. A year later she married Charles
Ferrell and has since lived in Grout township.
Surviving
Mrs. Farrell are three daughters, Mrs. Charlotte Williams, of Battle Creek;
Mrs. Adele Wagnitz, of Cleveland, Ohio; and Mrs. Mable Lane of Almot; two
sons---Charles Ferrell, of Grout township, and Walter Ferrell, of Three Rivers.

W. Fisch, 70, of 125 S. McCulloch Rd., Gladwin, died suddenly Sunday, Nov. 21,
of a heart attack. Born in Gladwin County on April 24, 1906, he had spent his
lifetime here. Mr. Fisch was a retired truck driver. He was married to the former
Hazel Lee Chandler in 1947.
Surviving
besides his wife, are 2 sons, Robert of Gladwin and Ronald of Gladwin and California;
2 brothers, Art of Gladwin and Oscar of Detroit; 2 sisters, Mrs. Edna Declerqe
of Florida and Mrs. Leona Davis of Detroit; and 5 grandchildren.
Services
will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel.
The Rev. Robert Shoaff will officiate and burial will be in the Grout Township Cemetery.

Mrs.
Hazel Fisch, 72, of Gladwin, died Wednesday, May 20, in the Midland Hospital Center
following a long illness. Born in Omaha, Neb., on September 4,1908, she came to
Gladwin County in 1945 from Detroit.
The
former Hazel Chandler, she was married to Fredrick Fisch in 1947. He preceded her
in death on November 21, 1976.
Surviving
are one son, Edward Krajicek of Omaha, Neb.; 2 sisters, Mrs. Daisy Leggitt of Vail,
Iowa and Mrs. Leafy Eggleston of Kansas City, Kan.; 11 grandchildren and 11
great grandchildren. A son, Conrad Krajicek, died in 1971.
Rites
were held Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel.

THE CAUSE---WAS ON HIS WAY HOME IN A BUGGY.
FRITZ---Fritz was found dead in the road a
quarter of a mile north of Winegar, Saturday night. He was on his way home from
Gladwin in a buggy, and the horse had gone on with the empty buggy to Winegar.
A trace was unhooked. Dr. A. O. Boulton was summoned and pronounced the cause
of his death apoplexy, and Coroner Wright decided an inquest unnecessary. Mr.

Gaines, 63, of Gladwin, died suddenly, Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999 in Gladwin. Born
Jan. 26, 1936 in Wayne County, he lived in Gladwin County since 1979 and
previously lived in Taylor. Paul married Donna (Hale) Dec. 28, 1957 in Inkster.
He was a stock clerk for Evans Products in Plymouth for 23 years.
Besides
his wife he is survived by one son, Glenn and wife Mary of Midland; four
daughters, Paula and husband Terry Umbleby of Weidman, Darlene and husband Gary
Varner of Remus; Carrie Gilbert of Cadillac, and Mary and husband Joe Grech of
Southgate; one sister, Ruth Rose of Stockbridge; one brother, James Gaines of Wayne;
seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The
family requested cremation and there are no services scheduled at this time.

H. Gaughan, 69, of 407 Cemetery St., Gladwin, died Feb. 2, in Saginaw Veterans
Hospital, following an illness of a year. A resident of Gladwin only eight
months, he was an employee of the Michigan State Security Commission for 25 years
before his retirement, coming here from Detroit. Born in Staten Island, N. Y.,
Sept. 22, 1900, Mr. Gaughan and the former Miss Ruth Raymond, of Gladwin, were
married in Detroit August 28, 1928.
Survivors
are a son, John T., of Detroit; and a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Ann) Painter,
Detroit; two brothers and two sisters, Thomas and Michael Gaughan, Mrs. Frank
Keating and Miss Mary Gaughan, all of Staten Island; and four grandchildren.
Funeral

Olive A. Goff, 65, of 181 E. Sherman St., Gladwin, died Thursday, April 1, in
the Gladwin Area Hospital. Born in Ft. Scott, Kan. On November 24, 1916, she
came to Gladwin County in 1969 from Escondido, Calif. She was a cook at the
former Huber's Restaurant.
The
former Olive Pyle, she was married to John Goff in Kilgore, Texas, on October
10, 1936. He preceded her in death July 4,1967.

J. Goodboo Sr., 60, died at the Gladwin Area. Hospital Tuesday, May 2,
following a short illness.
He
was born in Saginaw February 24, 1912, and had been a resident of Grout
Township since 1957. Mr. Goodboo was Employed as a mechanic at Roman Motor
Sales in Beaverton. He and the former Leah L. Hill were married in Saginaw June
29, 1934.
Surviving
are his wife, Leah; four daughters, Barbara at home, Mrs. Mary Cobb of Gladwin,
Mirs. Rose Harris and Mrs. Jane Harris, both of Imlay City; two sons, Raymond

Florence H. Graves, 75, of 7312 Dahlia, Midland and
formerly of Gladwin, died Thursday, July 13, 1989, in the MidMichigan Regional Medical
Center.
Born in Romeo, June 7,1914, she moved to Gladwin
County in 1963 and to Midland in 1981. Mrs. Graves was a retired case worker for
the State Department of Social Services and a member of the Secord Eagles Club
4121. The former Florence Vincent, she was married to R. B. Graves Dec. 17,
1932, in Holly. He preceded her in death in September 1976.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. Charles (Ginger)
VanSluyters of San Jose, Calif, and Mrs. Lou (Sherry) Crampton of Troy; one brother,
Robert of Nevada; one sister, Irene Stratton of California; 5 grandchildren and
5 great grandchildren. A sister, Mae, preceded her in death.

R. B. Graves, 65, of 3717 Lakeshore Drive, Gladwin, died
Saturday, Sept. 11, in the Midland Hospital. Born in Clare County, February 3,
1911, he was a master fieldstone mason in construction. Mr. Graves and the
former Florence Vincent were married December 17, 1932, in Holly. They moved to
Lansing in 1958 and had lived in Gladwin County since 1963.
Survivors are his wife, Florence H.; 2 daughters, Mrs.
Charles (Ginger) Van Sluyters of Pleasant Lake, and Mrs. Lou (Sherry) Crampton of

of Gladwin, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001 at his residence following a lingering
illness. Born July 16, 1922 in Beaverton, he was the son of the late Cecil and
Carrie (Rawn) Grice. Ronald married the former Ruth Carbeno, June 6, 1943 in
Gladwin. He lived in Gladwin County all of his life. Ronald retired from The
Dow Chemical Company in 1980. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II,
was a Boy Scout leader for Troop #79 for many years, and enjoyed hunting and
fishing.
Besides his
wife he is survived by three sons, Richard C. and wife Barbara of Gladwin,
William R. and wife Diane of Flint, and Gerald C. and wife Connie of Beaverton;
two daughters, Bonnie and husband Albert Trout of Lupton, and Connie McIntosh
of Gladwin; four sisters, Beulah Mathews and Joan and husband Ronald Cameron,
all of Gladwin; Dorothy and husband Harry Whisler of Midland, and va Henry of
Hope; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Carol Grice of
Midland. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Kenneth and
Elmer.
Services will
be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday) at the Sisson Funeral Home with Rev.
Donald Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Grout Cemetery. Friends may call

--- Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday for Ernest Griffin, 76, of
Gladwin County who died Wednesday at Clare General Hospital. Death was
attributed to a heart attack by Gladwin County Coroner Gerald Miner. Mr.
Griffin was born June 15, 1886 in Tuscola County. He was a member of Bard
Evangelical United Brethren Church.
Mr.
Griffin is survived by his widow, Mrs. Marguerite Griffin, at home; two sons,
Dr. Willis Griffin, of New Delhi, India and Horace of Gladwin; one daughter,
Mrs. Ruth Hoesli, of Gladwin; three brothers, Arthur of Saskatchewan, Canada;
Wesley of Gaylord and Ervin of Roscommon; one sister, Mrs. Ivan Nolan, of

Hospital. She was born October 18, 1895 in Cass County. The former Miss
Margueritte Rinehart was married to Earnest Griffin April 6, 1915, in Gladwin.
He preceded her in death in 1963. She was a charter member of the Bard E. U. B.
Church.
She
is survived by two sons, Horace of Gladwin, Willard of Lexington, Ky., one
daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Ruth) Hoesli of Gladwin, and one sister, Mrs. Vernon C.
Ort of Elkhart, Ind. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Bard

Nancy C., wife of Willard Grout, Sr., died Thursday,
Oct. 25, 1888, aged 76 years, 8 months and 17 days. Funeral services, conducted
by Elder Smallwood, were held at the Grout schoolhouse on the Sunday following
and largely attended.
Deceased was a native of Massachusetts, from which
state she moved with her parents in her younger days to New York state, and
from there to Canada. She was married there in 1834 to Willard Grout, and in
1846 they moved to St. Clair county, Michigan; from there in 1865 they moved to
Gladwin county, where they have since resided. Twelve children were born to
them, seven fo whom are living, viz.: Mrs. Sylvester Raymond, Mrs. Eugene
Wright, Mrs. Stephen Weaver, and Willard W. of this county, Mrs. T. F. Howland
of Wisconsin, George C. and Virgil S. of Wyoming. Gladwin County Record dated

IN THE LIFE OF A GLADWIN MAN RECALL THEM AND OLD MIDLAND COUNTY NAMES
Willard
Grout, Sr., of Gladwin county, died Feb. 28, the day after he had completed his
91st year. The Record gives some interesting incidents of Mr. Grout's life.
Having run short of money he at one time gave his note for $3 to Captain Bean,
of the famous steamer Belle Seymour, for transportation from Saginaw to
Midland, the remainder of the journey being completed in a canoe which was
poled up the river.
He
was the first farm settler in the county and moved, with his family, to the
land where he has since lived in 1865. The Record says:
Mr.
Grout's journey with his family to this county from Port Huron was by boat to
Bay City, and from Bay City to East Saginaw by stage. At East Saginaw there was
only one "tavern"---just across the street from where the Bancroft
house, now stands. The country between Saginaw and Midland was just settling,
Freeland was the first stopping place, and had a hotel.
At
Midland Benj. Ball kept a hotel and at Edenville John McMullen kept a hotel,
soon after Charlie Axford established his famous hostelry. The journey from
Saginaw to Gladwin took three days, all by river, poling by canoe from Midland.
At Edenville, or "Sixteen" then called, Alex Bowman, S. Erway, D.
Burton and Zenas Weaver were their among the few settlers. Ralph Dunton started
his store there soon after.

Frances M. Hale, 71, of 252 S. Bard Rd., Gladwin, died suddenly Thursday, Sept.
15, in the Gladwin Area Hospital. Born in Farwell, March 19, 1917, she had
spent most of her life in Gladwin County. Mrs. Hale worked at the Lone Pine
Restaurant in Clare for many years and at O’Dell’s until retiring in 1979. The
former Frances Brown, she married Gordon G. Hale, June 19, 1937, in Farewell.
Besides
her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Paul (Donna) Gaines of
Gladwin; one son, Carl of Gulfport, Miss.; 3 brothers, Ivan, Levi and Matt of
Farwell; 2 sisters, Mrs. Lila Strine of Cadillac and Mrs. Goldie DeCamp of
Clare; 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. A brother, Paul and a

D. Hale, 77, of 252 S. Bard Rd . Gladwin, died Tuesday, Nov. 22, 1994 in the
Gladwin Pines Nursing Home, following a long illness. Born Feb. 6. 1917 in
Clare, he resided in Gladwin County most his life. He worked as a crane
operator for the Larry McCulloch Gravel Pit and he retired in 1975. Mr. Hale
married the former Frances M . Brown June 19, 1937 in Farwell. She preceded him
in death Sept 15. 1988.
Surviving
are one daughter, Donna and husband Paul Gaines of Gladwin; one son , Carl of
Gulfport , Miss .; one brother. Lorn of Harrison; 10 grandchildren; 9 great
grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild. He was preceded In death by 3
brothers, Vem, Arnold and Ora Hale Jr . Rites were held at 1 p . m . Friday
from the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel, with the Rev. Donald Roberts

Charles E. Hersee was found dead May 30 on
the top of the bank of the
Charles E. Hersee was born June 15, 1860, in
Oxford county, Ontario, where he lived until his marriage August 2, 1888, when
he with his wife came to Gladwin county and settled on a farm in Sage near
Smith Creek where they resided about 20 years when he left the farm and entered
the merchantile business across the county line in Hamilton township, Clare
county. About three years ago, on account of failing health, he sold his store
and moved to Gladwin where they lived several months when he moved to
Mr. and Mrs. Hersee were the parents of
three daughters, of whom two, Mrs. Ruth McGuire and Mrs. Pearl Hilliker,
survive him; one daughter, Mrs. Pearl Adelblue, died while they were in
Mr. Hersee was a member of the Reorganized
Church of Latter Day Saints, a respected citizen, and his sad death is deeply
regretted. Services will be held at the Methodist Episcopal church Friday
morning conducted by Elder George W. Burt of

E. Hetherington, 87, of Gladwin, died Monday, Feb. 17, 1997 at MidMichigan
Regional Medical Center-Gladwin. He was born Jan. 9, 1910 in Gladwin to James
and Lucinda Gray Hetherington. Clarence served his country during World War II
in the Army with the 65th Medical Regiment and was a life member of VFW Post
11256. Clarence married the former Mae Zimmer, Dec. 15, 1950 in Gladwin. He
retired from the Gladwin County Road Commission in 1975 and enjoyed his
grandkids, hunting, fishing and his garage sales.
Besides his wife he is survived by one son,
Clarence Hetherington of Gladwin; three daughters, Darla and husband Tom Jones
of Essexville, Cindy and husband Bob LaMay of Gladwin, and Anna and husband
Steve Freund of National City; five sisters, Eulaylah Ridley, Veva Shaw, Nellie
Simpson and Mabel Coats, all of Gladwin and Mary Barker of Battle Creek; one
brother, Roy (Sam) Hetherington of Flint; 10 grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Regina Leppek
Hetherington and infant son in 1947; three brotherss,

OLD VETERAN HAS PASSED FROM EARTH
GROUT, MICH., Feb. 22.---(Special.)---It is
with regret that we must chronicle the death of an aged and esteemed friend Mr.
John Hetherington, who died last Wednesday at the advanced age of 75 years.
Deceased came to his death very suddenly and when least expected, and the kind
gentlemen goes to his reward after son many years of toil. He was a veteran of
the Civil War, having served under Gen. Buell in 1862, and was at several hotly
contested fights, in which he always played a conspicuous part. It was his
delight to tell war stories and many a night died he amuse his listeners by
such tales. His enemies were none, while his acquaintances were his friends and
the old comrade will be greatly missed in our neighborhood. The burial occurred
from Grout schoolhouse and was witnessed by a large concourse of people. His
remains are interred in Grout cemetery. In addition to his numerous friends, he
leaves four sons and two daughters to mourn his loss. Gladwin County Record

received a telegram on Thursday of last week announcing the death of their
brother, Will J. Howland near Evart. They proceeded thence, and returned with
the body of their brother on Friday eve. The unfortunate young man was employed
at the camps of Graham & McFarlane at
Rev. P. C. Bassett preached the funeral
sermon at the Grout schoolhouse last Sunday, and the remains were interred in
the Grout township cemetery. Deceased was 26 years of age. He was well-known

Church and the White Clover Chapter 84 O.E.S.

former Lydia Bullard, she was married to Clifford Gadd and he died in 1973. She
than married Rex Johnson and he died in 1983.

Gladwin Area Hospital. Born in Calumet, October 12, 1911, he moved to Flint in
1916. He was employed as a press operator at Buick Motors for 27 years,
retiring in 1968 and moving to Gladwin County in 1969. He and the former Freida
Gifford were married December 31, 1943 at Otisville. Mr. LaBeau was a member of
the West Branch L.0 .0 .M., the F.O.E; of Gladwin, and U.A.W. Local 599.

Church, the Gladwin Fraternal Order of Eagles 3292 and the Gladwin County
American Legion Post 171.
The
former Freida Gifford, she was married to Charles LaBeau on December 31, 1943, in
Otisville. He preceded her in death September 17,1976.

Lanphier an old-resident of Grout township, died yesterday morning, aged about
69 years. Mr. Lanphier has been considerably broken down in health of late,
having been confined to the house nearly all winter, and his death is
consequently no surprise. The funeral services are to be held at the Grout
schoolhouse today at 2 o'clock.
Mr.
Lanphier was a native of Ireland, from which he emigrated to Napanee, Canada,
at the age of 13 years. He came of good-stock, his father bearing the rank of
gentleman in his native country, and being a colonel in the British army, in
the service of which he died in France, leaving an estate valued at upwards of
$1,000,000, the latter of which, however, never inured to the benefit of Mr.
Lanphier. At Napanee, Mr. Lanphier resided for upwards of 40 years, locating at
that place, which now contains upwards of 6000 inhabitants, when it contained
but a few houses, and carried on an extensive boot and shoe trade there for a
number of years. He was married at this place to Miss Margaret Rombough at the
age of 25 years, and a family of eleven, four boys and seven girls, nine of
whom are now living, scattered in various parts of the country, blessed the
union. Some 13 years ago Mr. Lanphier removed from Canada to Lapeer county,
Michigan, and engaged in farming, and from there removed to Gladwin county
about nine years ago, settling down to farming in Grout township, where he has
since resided and prospered, --and was an industrious, upright an honored

C. Lewis. 90, of Gladwin. died Monday. Sept. 4. 1995. at his home. Born May
20., 1905 in Overton County, Tenn.. he moved to Gladwin in 1984 and had been at
Maple Manor for 11 years. Mr. Lewis worked for the Hudson Motor Car Co. for 39
1 /2 years. After his retirement, he owned and operated the Rustic Oasis Resort
at Houghton Lake.
He
first married the former Marie Gray, who preceded him in death in 1929. He then
married the former Mabel Schrank July 13. 1929 in Bowling Green. Ohio. She died
May 1. 1987.

Beaverton Baptist Church.

Nancy,
wife of Herbert Malcolm, of Grout, died Sunday morning from effects of burns
sustained, noted in last issue of Record. The burning occurred Thursday of last
week, and she was an intense sufferer from that time until her death. Fire
caught in the rear of her dress from a cook stove, and had got well under way
before being discovered. In her fright the fire could not be put out to save
her from being badly burned.
Nancy
was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Reid, of Grout township. She was 27 years
and 5 months old. Two small children are left to mourn the loss of a mother.
Funeral services were held at the schoolhouse in district No. 1, Grout, Monday,
and were largely attended. An excellent sermon was preached by Rev. J.

M. Maynard, 82, of Gladwin, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998 at the Mid Michigan
Regional
Medical Center- Gladwin. Born January 8, 1916 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, she was
the daughter of John and Margaret Carver McAlister.
She
married Reuel A. Maynard Oct. 28, 1955. He died in 1984. They came to Gladwin
in 1983 from Florida. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #84,
White Clover Chapter, Gladwin. She married Alvin Wright in 1933. He died in
1984.
Mildred
is survived by four daughters, Margaret Miller of Detroit, Catherine Zmich of Gladwin,
Theresa Webb of Westland, and Ruella Collis of Westland; her brother, Donald Brennecke
of McClenny, Fla.; 22 grand children; 31 great grand children; and one great great
grand child. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, one great grand daughter
and two brothers.
Services
were held Saturday at the Sisson Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Deane Wyllys
officiating. Burial was in the Grout Township Cemetery. An Eastern Star service
was held Friday

May McCulloch, 97, of Beaverton went to be with our Lord and Savior on Sunday,
Feb. 28, 2010 at her home.
She
was the daughter of the late ACP and Edna (Walke) Evans.
Virginia
was born in Union Co., Ohio on Feb. 3, 1913, and moved to the Village of Lyle
in Gladwin County with her family in 1915. Virginia married Willis H. McCulloch
II, on June 12, 1932 at the home of her parents on Lyle Road. She worked
alongside of her beloved husband, farming and raising their seven children on
the family Centennial farm, before he preceded her to Heaven on Dec. 31, 1987.
This
beautiful matriarch of one of the oldest families in Gladwin County, is
survived by her sons, Joseph P. (Sue) of Beaverton, Larry S. (Jo Ann) of Alden,
Jerry E. (Roberta) of Stockton, California, Dick C. (Lois) of Harrison, Willis
H. III (Joann), James Douglas, both of Beaverton; and daughter, Candace Jo of
Beaverton.
She
loved baking cookies and creating numerous memories with her 72 grandchildren,
of which there are 19 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, 21
great-great-grandchildren, including 10 sets of five generation continuing
legacies.
Virginia
was one of the first female Letter Carriers in Gladwin County, and an Avon
Representative for many years. Then in 1969, she attended college to become a
Hearing Technician and worked for the Central Michigan Health Department until
her retirement.
In
addition to being an active lifetime member of the Methodist Church, Virginia
enjoyed numerous activities including gardening, quilting, crocheting, playing
cards, bird-watching, and cross-country skiing, which she did as recently as
last winter. She was a wonderful, fun-loving woman, who dearly loved her
ever-growing family, shared her warmth and the strong strength of her faith
with her family and friends, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew
her.
Per
the request of Virginia, cremation has taken place, and plans for a memorial
service are pending. Memorial contributions may be offered to the Beaverton
Methodist Church, Hospice of Gladwin County, or the American Cancer Society.

O. Mielke, 85, of Clare County, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 1996 at his home
following a short illness. Born Feb. 28, 1911 in Clare County, he had been
employed by Dow Chemical in Midland until 1976 when he retired after 20 years
of service. He was also a lifetime farmer.
Mr.
Mielke married the former Irene Conner Sept. 18, 1937 in Clare. She preceded
him in death in 1982. Surviving are one son, Larry and wife Nancy of Gladwin;
one daughter, Lois and husband Thomas Garver of Cadillac; 2 sisters, Irma
Phelts of Mt. Pleasant, and Evelyn Tuck of Gladwin; 9 grandchildren; and 10
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, David in 1990; 4
brothers; and one sister.

were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday from the St. John Evangelical Church in Gladwin.

Gladwin, died Thursday, May 28, in the Clare Nursing Home following a short
illness.
Born in Arthur Township, Aug. 8, 1912, she was a
lifetime resident of Clare County. Mrs. Mielke operated the family farm and was
a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church. The former Ruby Conner was married
to Garry Mielke on April 12,1930 in Clare. He preceded her in death Feb. 9,
1966.
Surviving are 2 sons, Harold and Richard, both of
Arthur Township; a daughter, Barbara Fain of Swartz Creek; a sister, Ruth
Huggard of Midland; 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She was
preceeded in death by 2 sons, Donald, May 9, 1966 and Roger, Aug. 8, 1984 and 2
daughters, Rosemary in 1945 and Lois Ann in 1933.

Miller, 79, of 215 S. Antler St., Gladwin, died Monday, Sept. 30, 1991, in the
Mid Michigan Regional Medical Center, Gladwin, after a short illness. Born in
Harbor Beach, Dec. 4, 1911, he moved to Gladwin County in October 1966 from
Hazel Park. Mr. Miller was a welder for Linabery Products in Gladwin and
retired in 1974. He was a member of the Gladwin Assembly of God Church.
Mr.
Miller and the former Madeline Covill were married May 2, 1966, in Troy. Besides
his wife, he is survived by one son, Jack Jr. of Clawson; 3 step-daughters,
Mrs. Clifford (Nancy) Daugherty of Harrison, Mrs. Raymond (Jacquie) Wargo of Gladwin
and Linda Augsburger of Sterling Heights; 5 grandchildren and 6 great
grandchildren.

E. Mills, 87, of Gladwin, went to be with his Lord Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000. Born
Oct. 24, 1912, he was the oldest son of John and Bertha Mills. Charles married
Sarah Mae Farling, July 29, 1955. He owned and operated Victory Oil Company for
30 years, retiring in 1975. During World War II, he served his country as a
member of the U.S. Army
He
as an active member of the Gladwin Assembly of God Church, where he served as a
Sunday School teacher, board member, usher, and greeter. For several years, he
attended and helped establish the Albright Shores Assembly of God Church, where
he also served in many capacities.
Besides
his wife he is survived by two daughters, Melonie and husband Allan Rosenbrock
of Saginaw, Sharla and husband Lee Diesing of New Haven; two sisters, Helen
Moulton of Boyne City and Zella Wight of Grand Ledge; and one grandchild,
Stephanie Rosenbrock. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother,
John Francis.
A
remembrance service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Assembly of
God Church, Gladwin, with Pastors Donald Potter and Donald Roberts officiating.

funeral services of Elizabeth Mills, wife of Isaac Mills, of Grout township,
were held Sunday afternoon in the Grout school house, Rev. U. E. Partridge
officiating. Her death occured at her home last Saturday morning, she being 45
years, 6 months and 11 days old. Eight children survive her, one daughter being
married, and living at Pinconning, and a son who has been in the upper
peninsula for some time. Mrs. Mills came with her husband to Gladwin county
nine years ago, and enjoyed the respect and confidence of all who knew her. Her
death leaves a family of small children sadly bereaved in that they must miss

James R. Monroe (Foy), 39, died, following a stroke,
Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999 at Bay
Medical in Bay City. Born July 20, 1960 in Saginaw,
he was a lifetime resident of Gladwin County and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
JR graduated from Gladwin High School in 1979 and Central
Michigan University in 1992 with a bachelors of science degree in history and geography.
He recently completed a course in urban planning at CMU and had started an internship
at the Bay City Planning Commission. Upon completion of the internship, he was
seeking employment as a city planner.
Among his many interests were Celtic/Galic history,
culture and language; travel; reading; and long walks in the fields and woods
surrounding his home. He proudly served his country for eight years in the U.S.
Army as a tow gunner in Germany and Hawaii, after which he continued to serve
in the Army National Guard/Reserve.
JR is survived by his mother, Joy Monroe of
Beaverton; one sister, Catherine Thorington. (Foy) and husband Bill of Beaverton;
two brothers, Michael and wife Kelly Foy of Grand Ledge, and Robert Foy of
Gladwin; four nephews; and one niece. He is dearly loved and will be greatly
missed as long as the sun rises and sets, by his family and friends.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Emmanuel
Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Brown and Rev. David Winters officiating. Burial
will be in Grout Township Cemetery. Friends may call at the Sisson Funeral Home

80, of Beaverton, died Tuesday, June 26, 2001 at MidMichigan Medical
Center-Midland. Born May 5, 1921 in Flint, he was the son of Marion and Mary
Moody. He lived in Gladwin County since March of this year and previously lived
in Jamestown, Tenn. Fred married Juana (Strunk), March 8, 2001 in Huntsville,
Tenn.
He was a car salesman for Moody’s in Jamestown, Tenn.,
retiring in 1999. He was a member of the Grace Bible Church in Beaverton.
Besides his
wife he is survived by three sons, Rondal and wife Geraldine, and Larry and
wife Mary, all of Jamestown, Tenn., and Darrell and wife Norma of Nashville,
Tenn.; one daughter, Sharon and husband Clarence Garrett of Jamestown, Tenn.;
eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two
stepgreat-grandchildren; two stepsons, Jerry Moody of Beaverton and Donald
Wayne Moody of Jamestown, Tenn; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded
in death by his wife, Edith, in November 2000; his parents; and three brothers.

William Norton, 72, died at his home in Grout township this morning, Wednesday,
after an illness of several years. Funeral services will be held on Saturday
afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Hall Funeral Home with burial in the Grout
cemetery. The Rev. John Scott, pastor of the Grout Methodist Church will
officiate.
Mrs.
Norton was born on September 6, 1875 in Sanilac county, the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Joseph Norton. He was married to Miss Florence Matthews on Feb ruary 20, 1895
in Falmouth. The Norton's moved to Gladwin 36 years ago and have operated a
farm in Grout township since that time.
Surviving
besides his wife, are two sons, James Norton of Birch Run and Chestly J. Norton
of Fostoria, Michigan; one daughter Mrs Ethel Brant of Gladwin; also 10 grandchildren
and 11 great grandchildren. One son, Gerald preceded his father in death in

and died in Grout July 1,1898, aged 44 years, 3 months, 23 days. Funeral

services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home for Mrs. Florence
Mae Norton, 78, who died Saturday after an illness of one year.She had been a
lifetime resident of Gladwin County. Burial was in Grout cemetery, with the
Rev. Roy Arnold of Flint as officiating clergyman. Mrs. Norton was born in
Canada on June 26, 1878, the daughter of Jane and George Matthews. On February
19, 1894, she was married to William Norton in Falmouth, Michigan, who preceded
her in death in 1948.
Surviving
are one daughter, Mrs. Arthur Brant of Gladwin; two sons, James of Birch Run
and Chester of Otter Lake; 10 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. One
son, Gerald, is deceased. One sister, Mrs. Ada Bradley of Vernon, and one

Services
were held at the Ross-Hall Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon for Gerald G. Norton
of Flint, conducted by Rev. Charles H. Wood. Burial was at the Grout cemetery.
Mr.
Norton died Sunday, September 25, at the Pontiac Sanitarium following an
operation. He was 35 years old and his home was at Flint.
He
is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Norton, of Sage township, and
son, Leslie George, 12 years old; two brothers and one sister, Chester and
James Norton and Mrs. Ethel Cole of Flint.
Pall
bearers were Gordon Willford, Cary Bowen and Roy Watson of Sage township,
Curtis Bradley and Ray Bowen of Detroit and Justin Bauserman of Flint. A large

NORTON.--Joseph Norton was born April 27,
1847, in Sanilac county, this state, and died Oct. 23, 1915, at the home of his
son, William Norton of Sage township. He suffered a stroke of paralysis Friday
morning, from which there was no help. Mr. Norton was married to Elizabeth
Maxwell of Sanilac county, Oct. 2, 1872. To this union were born six children,
four of whom have passed to the great beyond, and Mrs. Norton having gone to
her reward July 17, 1898.
He leaves to mourn his loss one daughter,
Mrs. Hiram Hall of Grout township and one son, William Norton of Sage township,
besides friends and neighbors, who will miss him in the daily walk of life.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. H. Cornelius at 2 o'clock Monday
from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Hall, with interment in Grout cemetery.

JOHN PARKER DIES OF HEART ATTACK
A sudden heart attack was fatal to John G. Parker,
64, Gladwin township supervisor, who died at his Gladwin township home Sunday.
Mr. Parker appeared to be in the best of health while in Gladwin for the
four-day April session of the Board of Supervisors last week.
Born in Huron county, July 3, 1874, he later moved
to Grout township of Gladwin county and worked in the lumber woods in this
locality for several years. In 1897 he was married to Miss Minnie Brown who
died six years later leaving him with one child, Inez Mae, who succumbed in
1936. In 1908 he married Mrs. Nellie Gustin who now survives.
The Parkers moved to Grout township to Clare in 1932
and Mr. Parker became representative for a national clothing concern. Later
they moved to Pontiac where he was employed at the State Hospital. They
returned to Gladwin township several years ago and have been operating a gas
station and grocery store there.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son,
Clifford; a step-son, Harry Gustin, of Flint; a brother, Oscar Parker, of
Elkton, and seven grandchildren. Services were held Wednesday afternoon at the
Rogers Funeral Home. The Rev. Karl H. Keefer officiated and burial was in the

Nursing Home.
Born
Sept. 7, 1925 in Gladwin County, he was a lifetime resident of Gladwin County.
Mr. Parker retired from Dow Chemical in 1983 and he also farmed in Gladwin
County.
He
married the former Vera Councell Oct. 10,1951 in Gladwin. Besides his wife, he
is survived by 4 daughters, Sandra and husband Clark Wentz of Beaverton, Peggy
and husband Dan Rowley, Kathy and husband Mark Endert, and Lisa and husband Tom
Largent, all of Gladwin; one brother, Clarence of Gladwin; and 9 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Wayne.
Services
will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from the Sisson Funeral Home in Gladwin with
the Rev. Deane Wyllys and the Rev. Jack Metzler officiating. Burial will be in

Wilma L. Parker, 94, of 3549 W. Kerswill Rd., Gladwin, died Sunday, Jan. 26,
1992, in the Mid Michigan Regional Medical Center, Gladwin, after a long illness.
Born in Van Wert, Ohio, Dec. 16, 1897, she moved to Gladwin County in 1906.
Before her health became bad she was active in the Gladwin County Home
Extension and the Hope Circle of the Gladwin First United Methodist Church.
The
former Wilma Trego, she was married to Albert Parker on Dec. 23, 1915, in
Gladwin. He
preceded
her in death, July 14, 1967. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Michael (Donna
Lee) Lowe of Flint; 2 sons, Walter of Gladwin and Curtis of Bradley, Calif.; 7 grandchildren,
10 great grandchildren and 6 great, great grandchildren. She was preceded in death
by a son, Harold on April 15, 1980 and a daughter, Mrs. Lela Grove in July
1968.

William Pries died at his home in Grout, May
19, 1911, aged 86 years, 1 month and 3 days, death resulting from diseases
incident to old age. Mr. Priest was born in Licking county,
Funeral was held from his home at 1 p.m. and
from Grout school-house at 1:30 p.m., Monday, Rev. Betts of Gladwin officiating.
He was a man of sturdy constitution, excellent habits and fine moral character.
He continued to be active in his accustomed pursuits until long past the age at
which men ordinarily drop out of the ranks of the workers. He was a good
neighbor and there was no happier family circle than his. His best monument
will be the good report that he left behind him in the community in which he
lived.

Eliza Jane Reid died Feb. 8 at her home in Grout
township of heart trouble, having been ill since November. She was born in New

Methodist church. She was the widow of William Reid, and had lived in Grout
township some 35 years, rearing a, family of children, of whom several survive.

The farm of William Reid, four miles west of
Gladwin, was the scene Sunday of one of the most appalling accidents that ever
took place in Gladwin county, resulting in the death of William Reid and his
two sons, Arthur B. and James. The victims were overcome by gas in a well and
afterward drowned.
The fatal well is within a few feet of the
Reid residence, and is 48 feet deep besides being banked up a few feet. It is
the old fashioned kind, covered with a well house, the water being drawn by a
windlass and bucket. A ladder is attached to one side of the well. On Saturday
the bucket became detached, falling in the water in the well, the water said to
be only three feet deep. Mr. Reid and sons were away from home, but when they
arrived Mrs. Reid spoke of the loss of the bucket.
The youngest son, Arthur, left the house
about 8 o'clock Sunday morning, and he was followed by his father an hour or so
after. Nothing was thought of their absence, as it was customary for them to
visit neighbors near by Sundays. But subsequent events tend to show that the
son went down in the well after the bucket and was followed by the father.
James was in the house sleeping during the forenoon, but at 1 p.m. his mother
called him to get the bucket. While he was after the bucket, she got a pail of
water from a neighbor's well. Returning she noticed shoes and hat left by James
near the well. She looked for him in the well, but owing to the depth of the
well could not see the bottom plainly. However, she started down the well, but
better judgement prevailed, and she came back before going far.
Then Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Morris were passing
along the road and were hailed. Mr. Morris started to go down the well, but
owing to warnings of his wife did not go. C. L. Ferrell, a brother of Mrs.
Morris, had a narrow escape from death by gas in a well only a year or so ago,
and the idea of deadly gas in the well then occurred. Neighbors were summoned
and with ice tongs the lifeless bodies were pulled from the well, first secured
being Arthur, next Mr. Reid, the father, then James, the son, in the order they
are supposed to have gone down. They were also found with their heads down.
Lanterns lowered in the well went out at a depth of 15 to 20 feet, and a cat at
same distance became nearly lifeless in a few moments. From these experiments
the supposition is that the victims fell into the water when they reached the
gas line at this depth.
News of the sad affair soon spread, and many
visitors were on hand. Mrs. Reid was crazed with grief, and is in a serious
condition from the shock. Mr. Reid and family moved to Gladwin from
Mr. Reid was 62 years old; Arthur B., the
youngest son, was 17 years, and James, the other son, 23 years of age. They
were well known and highly respected in the county. The sons had but recently
secured an insurance of $1,000 each in the Gleaners in favor of their mother.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the
schoolhouse in district No. 1, Grout, conducted by Rev. McGraham, pastor of the
Presbyterian church at Coleman, assisted by Revs. DeLong and Huff. The
attendance was a very large, the procession being nearly a mile long. The
remains were interred in two graves in the Grout cemetery, the father in one

Mabel M. Richardson, 69, of 1 River Ct., Gladwin,
died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 1989, in the Mid Michigan Regional Medical Center,
Midland after a long illness. Born in Winnepeg, Manitoba, Can., Oct. 13, 1919,
she moved to Gladwin County in July 1975 from Cicero, Ill., Mrs. Richardson was
a member of the Wooden Shoe United Methodist Church.
The former Mabel Darling, she was married to Paul
Richardson in 1951 in Chicago. He preceded her in death April 6,1976. Surviving
are 2 sons, Michael of Elgin, Ill., and Daniel of Gladwin; one daughter, Carol
Wicker of Beaverton; and 6 grandchildren. A son, Paul Jr., one brother, Delmer and
a sister, Violet Gotz, also preceded her in death.
Services were held Saturday at 11 a.m. from the
Sisson-Mathews Funeral Home. The Rev. Carter Miller officiated and burial was

Sunday claims life of Billings Township woman
A
26-year-old Beaverton woman lost her life in a fire that swept through her
one-story home in
Billings
Township Sunday night. Polly Ann Ryan, who lived at 3944 Shorky St., was
pronounced
dead
at the scene, Billings Township firemen said. Authorities said she was overcome
by the smoke and flames and an autopsy was done in Lansing Monday. Authorities
said Mrs. Ryan was home alone at the time of the fire. Her husband, Ricky Ryan,
was at a neighbor's house and
reportedly
had gone home to check on his wife when he noticed smoke coming from the
eaves.
Apparently
Ryan called to the neighbors who reported the fire at 11:11 p.m. Ryan then
attempted to enter the home through a door, but was driven back by the intense
smoke and heat. He then broke windows out in the bedroom, sustaining cuts to
both hands, in an attempt to reach his wife.
Ryan
was taken to the Gladwin Area Hospital, admitted for treatment and observation
and discharged Monday morning. When firemen from the Billings Township Fire
Department arrived, flames were shooting out of the livingroom window and the single
story home was totally engulfed, authorities said.
"From
what we're able to determine, it appears the fire was accidental," said
Billings fireman
Ken
Storms. "It's a real tragedy." Billings firemen received mutual aid
assistance from the Edenville Fire Department, which sent a tanker, pumper and
personnel.
This
is the first fire-related fatality since the Billings department was organized
14 years ago.
Officials
have been unable to determine the cause of the fire or where it originated. One
area they are looking at is in the livingroom where Mrs. Ryan and a portable
propane space heater was found.
Detective
Sgt. Jim Bush of the State Fire Marshall Division in Flint, was called in to
investigate. Bush, along with local authorities, spent most of Monday at the scene,
sifting through the rubble in search of a clue to determine the cause or fire
origin. Also assisting at the scene were the Gladwin Sheriffs Department,
Gladwin Emergency Medical Services of Midland Hospital and the Billings
Township Rescue Squad.
The
home and its contents were a total loss and there is some insurance, firemen
said. This is the second fire fatality in the county this year. A Beaverton
woman lost her life in a mobile home fire Feb. 5, in the city of Beaverton. Mrs.

Ann Ryan, 26, of 3944 Shorky St., All-Bright Shores, died Sunday night, Nov. 2,
in a house fire at her home. Born Oct. 5, 1960, in Ypsilanti, she was a
carpenter's helper for R & H Remodeling. The former Polly Sirdan, she was
married to Ricky Ryan June 24, in Gladwin.
Besides
her husband, she is survived by 2 children, Deanne and John Gagne of Gladwin;
her parents, Kenneth and Betty Sirdan of Westland; 4 brothers, Kenneth Jr. and
David of Westland; John and Cecil, at home; 2 sisters, Vicki Aldrige of
Washington D.C. and Martha, at home; and her mother-in-law, Mrs. Alora Springer
of Gladwin.

Township on Nov. 26, 1911, he had attended schools and spent his lifetime here.
Mr. Shearer farmed until 1964 and then worked in construction until 1967. He
was a member of the Gladwin Free Methodist Church and the Farm Bureau.
Mr.
Shearer and the former Verna Foor were married June 7, 1935, in Gladwin. Besides
his wife, he is survived by 3 sons, Francis of WaPaca, Wisc, William and Edwin
of Gladwin; one brother, Alvin of Gladwin; 2 sisters, Mrs. Edna Edick of Gladwin
and Doris Shearer of Lansing; 16 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. A
son, Edward, preceded him in death Sept. 11, 1981, and also a sister.
Services
were held Thursday at 3 p.m. from the Free Methodist Church. The Rev. Burton
Kincaid officiated and burial was in the Grout Township Cemetery. Arrangements

W. Smith, 71, of 5444 Pine St., Gladwin, died Sunday, October 31, at his home.
Born in Hunt City, Ill., March 14, 1905, he came to Detroit in 1929, where he
worked as Kroger Stores manager and as a foreman at Cadillac Motors. Retiring
in 1967, he moved to Taylor, Belleville and Stockbridge before coming to
Gladwin County in July of this year. He was married to the former Agnes McCafferty
June 17, 1926, in Springfield, Ill., and she survives.
Other
survivors are 3 daughters, including Mrs. Amos (Lauretta) Martin of Gladwin; a
son, 3 sisters, 8 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter. Services were held
Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Mathews Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald Bates

Home after an illness of 4 years. Born in Gladwin Township, Jan. 16, 1913, she
had spent her lifetime in Gladwin County. She was a member of the Gladwin Free
Methodist Church. The former Verna Foor, she was married to John Shearer June
7, 1935, in Gladwin. He preceded her in death on Oct. 30, 1984.
Surviving

Barryton; 3 sisters, Velda Jakabowski and Donna Haines of Gladwin and Dorothy

Franklin H. Stevenson Jr., 72, of Gladwin died
Sunday, March 15, 1998 at MidMichigan Medical
Center-Gladwin. Born Dec. 6,1925 in Detroit, he was
the son of Franklin and Marjorie Bradfield Stevenson Sr. He worked as an
electrician for General Motors, retiring in 1975. Frank married the former
Betty Phillips, July 21, 1945 in Wayne County. He was a veteran of World War II
and the Korean Conflict and a member of American Legion Post 233 in Lake Orion.
Besides his wife he is survived by one daughter,
Rosemary Stevenson of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three sons, Richard and wife Jill of Lake
Orion, Robert and wife Winnie of Gladwin, and Roger and wife Kim of Las Vegas,
Nev.; two sisters, Florence and husband J.B. Murphree, and Ruth and husband
Glen Squire, all of Florida; 10 grandchildren; and six greatgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother and two
sisters.

Ivan Swetnich, 77, of Beaverton, died Sunday, Nov.
8,1998 at home after a long illness. Born Nov. 28, 1920 in Pittsburgh, Penn.,
he lived in Gladwin County seven years and previously lived in Kingman, Ariz. Ivan
married the former Marietta Spencer, Nov. 14, 1942 in Detroit. She preceded him
in death in 1958. He worked for Bundy Corporation in Warren, retiring in 1977
after 38 years. He belonged to VFW 7303 in Beaverton.
Besides his wife he is survived by three daughters,
Mary Lee and husband Carthel Strunk, and Phyllis and husband Edel Strunk, all
of Beaverton, and Deborah and husband Keith Valko of Roseville; one brother,
Nick of Colorado; eight grandchildren; 15 greatgrandchildren; and several
nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, and one brother.

DANIEL ULCH
Daniel Leon Ulch, 62, of 444 N. Athey Road, Gladwin,
passed away on June 13, at his residence. He was born on December 27, 1913, in
Alpena County, the son of George and Leontine (Roy) Ulch. He was married May 6,
1935, to Alberta Mitchell in Dearborn. Mr. Ulch had made his residence on Athey
road for the last 6 years. He was a member of the Our Savior Lutheran Church of
Gladwin.
Surviving are his wife, Alberta; 3 sons, Daniel R.
of Romulus, Leonard G. of Taylor, Robert L. at home; 2 daughters, Mrs. Beverly
J. Bixman of West Virginia, and Mrs. Elizabeth J. Meirthew of Taylor; his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Ulch of Gladwin; 2 brothers, Leon of Florida, and
George of Gladwin; 2 brothers, Leon of Florida, and George of Gladwin; 5
sisters, Juanita of Dearborn Hts., Angeline of Florida, Dorothy of Taylor,
Corrine of St. Clair Shores, and Ilean of Garden City; 22 grandchildren and 1
great grandchild.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 16 at 1
p.m. from Coker Funeral Home, Harrison, with the Rev. Herbert Biermann
officiating. Interment was in Grout Township Cemetery, Gladwin. Gladwin County

WALKER, OF GROUT, DIED SUNDAY.
Andrew
Walker, who has been a resident of Grout township since 1898, died Sunday. He
was born at Houghton, Ont., in 1844, and in 1868 was united in marriage to Miss
Harriette M. Chatterton, who is a sister of T. L. Chatterton, of Grout, and of
Mrs. D. J. Borden, of this city. His wife survives him. Six children sprung
from the union, the eldest of which is 23 years of age and the youngest 4
years.
The
funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the Grout schoolhouse grounds. Owing to
the large attendance it was decided to hold the funeral services in the grove
back of the schoolhouse. Rev. A. N. Henne preached the funeral sermon.
Mr.
Walker was a member of Gladwin tent K.O.T.M., and the members of the tent were
present in large numbers as were also the members of Little Mike's tent. The
Maccabees marched in the procession in a body, and the Maccabee funeral rite
was conducted at the grave. Some 45 carriages formed in the procession from the

Crystal Marie Walker, infant daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Randall Walker of 2516 S. Hoover Ave., Gladwin, died following birth
Monday, March 29, in the Midland Hospital.
Besides her parents, she is survived by her
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Walker of Gladwin and Mr. and Mrs. Dale
Gould of Beaverton; and her great grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Walker
and Mrs. Velma Markle of Gladwin, Mr. and Mrs. Elwin Leach Sr. of Pickford and
Mrs. Minnie Smith of Beaverton.
Graveside services were held Thursday at 11 a.m. at
the Grout Cemetery with the Rev. Donald Bates officiating. Arrangements were in

Mrs.
Harriette M. Walker died Feb. 16, 1932, at the home of her daughter, Mrs.
George Dutcher, at Jackson, where she has been living the past three years.
Harriette M. Chatterton was born March 30, 1849, in Ontarion. She was married
in 1868 to Andrew Walker.
In
1888 Mr. and Mrs. Walker came to Gladwin and located on a farm in Grout
township, where Mr. Walker died in July, 1896, leaving her with a family of six
children.
The
body was brought to Gladwin Wednesday and funeral services will be held today
at 1:30 p.m. at the West Grout Methodist church, conducted by Rev. L. M.
Whitney, followed by burial at the Grout township cemetery.
She
is survived by three sons, Walter C. and John of Grout township and Emery
Walker of Jackson; two daughters, Mrs. Belle Dutcher and Mrs. Josephine Melling
of Jackson; two brothers and two sisters, T. L. Chatterton of Gladwin, Mrs. D.
J. Borden of Ann Arbor, Mrs. Belle Harvey and William Chatterton of Tilsonburg,

A. Warner, 71, of 153 Channel Ct., Houghton Lake, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, in
Mercy Hospital, Grayling, after a long illness. Born in Grout Township Sept. 26,
1915, she had spent most of her life here. She moved to Houghton Lake in 1980
and was a member of the Markey Baptist Church.
The
former Donna Steele, she was married to Ernest Warner June 26, 1935, in
Gladwin. Besides her husband, she is survived by 2 sons, Wayne and Joseph of
Gladwin; 2 daughters, Mrs. Gerald (Delores) Gardner of DeWitt and Mrs. Ilene
Locke of Centerline; her step-mother, Mrs. Luther (Clara) Mobmaw of Gladwin; one
brother, Dean of Prudenville; one sister, Mrs. Marie Raymond of Warren; a
half-brother, Floyd Steele of Midland; 3 half-sisters, Armeda Cameron of
Gladwin, Susan Kroll of Beaverton and Lucille Windover of Midland; and 7
grandchildren.

JAMES W. WEAVER
James W. Weaver, 83, of Gladwin, died Thursday, Nov.
2, 1995 at the MidMichigan Regional Medical Center - Gladwin. Bom July 19, 1912
in Clare County, he resided most of his life in Gladwin County. Mr. Weaver farmed
and was a mail carrier for 8 years with the Gladwin Post Office. He was a
veteran of World War II and was also a member of the Farm Bureau.
Surviving are 2 sisters, Irma Weaver of Gladwin, and
Irene (Mrs. Don) Lyons of Gladwin; and one sister-in-law. Doris Weaver of Gladwin.
He was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Elmer Weaver in 1992, Stanley Weaver in
1924 and Warren Weaver in 1921.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday from the Sisson
Funeral Home in Gladwin with the Rev. Brian Cuddle officiating. Burial was in

Billie Joe Willis, 70, of Beaverton, died suddenly Tuesday,
May 27 at MidMichigan Regional Medical Center - Gladwin. Born January 29, 1927
in Johnson City, Tenn. to B.W. and Anne Treadwell Willis, he served his country
in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He married the former Shirley Rose Aug. 15, 1953 in
Detroit and worked for Cadillac Motors retiring in 1982 and moving to Gladwin
in 1985. He was a member of the Round Lake Baptist Church and the V.F.W. Post
7303.
Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Betty
Barwikowski of Grosse Ile; two sons Billie Joe and wife Dorothy Willis Jr. of. Beaverton,
and the Rev. Mark and wife Ann Willis of Kirkville, Missouri; one brother, Bud
Willis of Orlando, Fla.; one sister, Margaret Young of Johnson City, Tenn.; six
grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one
brother.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Round Lake
Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert F. Brown officiating. Burial was in the
Grout Township Cemetery. Graveside services were under the auspices of V.F.W.

H. (Fergie) Wood, 80, of 4516 Nipigon, Gladwin, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 1990,
at his home after a long illness. Born in Lac-Du-Flambeau, Wisc, Jan. 26,1910,
he moved to Gladwin County in 1969 from Pontiac. Mr. Wood was a pattern maker for
GMC Truck & Coach and retired in 1969 after 35 years. He was a member of
the Gladwin Church of Christ and the Beaverton Chapter UAW Retirees. Mr. Wood
and the former Naomi Russell were married Aug. 23, 1932, in Pontiac.
Besides
his wife, he is survived by 2 sons, Larry and Danny Sr. of Gladwin; 4 brothers,
Dale of Pontiac, William of Gladwin, Burl of Barryton and Leland of Daytona Beach,
Fla.; 3 sisters, Gloria Driver of Lake Orion, Mana Powers of Greenville and Foy
Williams of Barryton: 4 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
A
memorial service was held Saturday at 1 p.m. from the Gladwin Church of Christ
with Coleman Allmond officiating. Arrangements were in charge of the Hall

M. Wood, 92, passed away after a long illness on Jan. 4, 2009, in Gladwin. She
was born on April 30, 1916, in Detroit, to Lamont and Irene (Jasmond) Russell.
Naomi married Ferdnit Wood on Aug. 23, 1932, in Pontiac; he preceded her in
death in 1990.
She
was a homemaker living in Gladwin County since 1969, previously residing in
Pontiac. She was a member of Gladwin Church of Christ and the VFW Post #7303
Ladies Auxiliary.
She
is survived by her sons, Larry Wood of Gladwin, Danny (Mary) Wood of Gladwin;
grandchildren, Dan and Nazali Wood of Beaverton, Gregory and Valarie Wood of
Gladwin, and Richard and Mary Wood of California; great-grandchildren, Jenna
and Jeremy Onweller of Beaverton, Gregory and Tracey Wood of West Branch,
Mathew Wood of Glaedwin, McCall Wood of California, Austin Wood of California;
and great-great grandchildren, Seth Onweller of Beaverton and Ethan Wood of
West Branch.
She
was preceded in death by her husband; parents; grand-daughter, Naomi D. Wood;
sister, Esther Brady; and brother, Gerald Russell.
Funeral
services will be conducted on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Gladwin
Church of Christ with Rev. Tony Reynolds officiating. Burial will take place at
Grout Twp. Cemetery in Gladwin. Hall-Kokotovich Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements.

Tragedy struck a Gladwin couple in
Woods, 62, was found dead in the travel
trailer they had used on previous trips in search of their ancestory to
southern

County Historical Society, had developed an interest in researching his roots
before the society was formed. Relatives said the couple had already traced
back several generations.

Donald G. Wyatt, 74,
of Beaverton died May 23, 2002 at Gratiot Community Hospital in Alma, Michigan,
following a short illness. Donald was born December 25, 1927 to Riley and
Liddie (Wilson) Wyatt in Raleigh, North Carolina. He married to Josephine
(Ackerman) on November 25, 1967 in Detroit. He was employed at Great Lakes
Steele in Ecorse, Michigan as a Millwright. He lived in Gladwin County for 25
years, having previously lived in Detroit.
Surviving him
are his wife, Josephine; five daughters, Angela Wyatt of Beaverton, Mary (Lee)
Salisbury of Beaverton, Debbie Schmitzer of Farwell, Cynthia Donaldson of
Clare, and Delores Hope of Florida; three sons, Jimmy Donaldson of Alabama,
David Wyatt of Florida, and Glenn Donaldson of Belleville, Michigan; two
brothers, Arlen Wyatt and Roy Wyatt, both of North Carolina; and nine
grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

services were held Saturday, May 25, 2002 at 1 pm. at Hall Funeral Home in

HOWARD B. YAGER SR.
Howard B. Yager, Sr., 89, of Gladwin, died suddenly,
Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999 at home. Born Sept. 1, 1909 in Fenton, he lived in
Gladwin County since 1967 and previously lived in Saginaw. He was a veteran of World
War II, serving in the U.S. Army. Howard married Evelyn (Eberle) Yager, Aug. 6,
1942 in Denver, Colo. He was an x-ray technician for 25 years for Gladwin
Hospital, Gladwin, retiring in 1977.
Besides his wife he is survived by three sons,
Howard B. Jr. and wife Jean of Bay City, Carl and wife Carolyn, and Ronald and
wife Sherri, all of Midland; one daughter, Deborah and husband Melvin Stewart
of Cadillac; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in
death by four brothers and one sister.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hall
Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel with Rev. Father Gerald Kukla officiating. Burial
was in Grout Township Cemetery, Gladwin. Memorial contributions may be made to the
