1909 Journal of Norman Bergey of Gladwin County.

A special thanks to Dawn Daniels who has transcribed this journal. It contains a number of names of Gladwin County residents.

1909 Journal of Norman Bergey, ( born Mar. 18, 1878, in Chatham, ON, married Ida Mae
Wesley on June 24, 1908) in which Norman moves to Equity, Gladwin Co.,MI, clears his
land, builds a home, works on the meridian road, and becomes a father.  

Misc. fact from the Gazette portion of the Journal:  Domestic postage was 2 cents per
ounce.  In the chart included to calculate intrest, 6% was the highest intrest mentioned. 
Also included was a Weekly Table of Wages, Nine Hours per Day, which could be used to
figure the amount owed to an employee for less than a full week's work.  For example, if
your wage was $2.00 per week, you were earning 30 cents for eight hours work.  The
population of Michigan was 58, 915, and the population of New York City was 3, 437,
202.   It was noted that the Indian Territory was now called the state of Oklahoma. 
Presidents of the United States were listed, Washington through Theodore Roosevelt. 
The first aid section recommended covering burns with olive or linseed oil mixed with
chalk.

JANUARY

1-Cold day.  Worked for Wesley Schlichter.  Took a fat cow to Brown City stockyard and
did chores rest of the day.

2-Nice day.  Took milk to creamery in forenoon.  Did chores in afternoon.

3-Nice day.  Did chores in forenoon and then went home for a while.

4-Fine day.  Did chores in forenoon.  Filled up bags of oats in afternoon.

5-Fine day.  Did chores in forenoon and took oats to Brown City elevator.

6-Stormy day.  Put up oats in bags in forenoon.  In afternoon, helped Allen Whitmer move
a house with a team.

7-Windy day.  Took oats to Brown City elevator in forenoon.  Went to Brown City in
afternoon and received check for oats and paid out for Wesley S. (Schlichter) for coal, 1
bbl. of salt, and taxes.  Deposited the rest of the check in Brown City Savings Bank.

8-Fine day.  Did chores all day.

9-Fine day.  Brought milk and crean to creamery and bought $1.65 worth of coke for
myself.  Did chores in forenoon.

10-Fine day.  Did chores in morning and went home.  Ida and I took supper at Wesley
Schlichter's.

11-Fine day.  Went to Brown City for 790 lbs. of coal for Wesley S.(Schlichter) and got
15 egg crates, 1 bbl. of molasses for horses.  Got 1 qt. of axle grease and 1 bbl. tar(?). 
Did chores rest of the day.

12-Fine day but cold.  Did chores all day.

13-Fine day.  Took cream and milk to creamery and did chores.

14-Fine day.  Did chores and drew in straw.

15-Fine day.  Did chores all day.

16-Cold and stormy.  Brought cream and milk to creamery and got buttermilk, coal, and
spray-barrel.  Did chores in afternoon.

17-Fine day.  Did chores all day.

18-Fine day.  Did chores all day.  At night, got a jerk rod for a windmill pump.

19-Fine day.  Fixed windmill and did chores in forenoon.  To town in afternoon and got
hard-coal for myself and W.S.(Wesley Schlichter) Moved gasoline engine to rail-pile and
also buzz-saw.

20-Fine day.  Took milk and cream to creamery and did chores in forenoon.  Helped
buzzed wood in afternoon.  Took gasoline engine and saw to John Taylor's.

21-Nice warm day.  Drew in wook and did chores.

22-Rainy day.  Fixed wind-mill in forenoon.   Down town in afternoon for axle of wagon
and did chores.

23-Rain in morning and then fine.  Went to creamery with milk and cream and got
buttermilk in forenoon.  Drew straw and did chores in afternoon.

24-Fine day.  Did chores all day.

25-Fine day.  Did chores and opened silo.

26-Fine day.  Cleaned pig-pen and did chores.

27-Fine day.  Took cream and milk to creamery in forenoon and did chores.

28-Fine day.  Did chores all day.

29-Stormy day.  Did chores all day.

30-Stormy day.  Took cream and milk to creamery and got buttermilk.  Did chores the
rest of the day.

31-Stormy day. Did chores in the morning.  Was home the rest of the time.

FEBRUARY

1-Nice day.  Did chores all day.  Took W.S. (Wesley Schlichter) down town at night.

2-Stormy day.  Did chores all day.

3-Dull day.  Took cream and milk to creamery and got buttermilk and coke.  Left four
cream-cans at Hossack &Marion's for repairs.  Did chores rest of day.  Queen lost her
colt.

4-Nice day.  Snow melting fast.  Did chores all day.

5-Dull and rainy.  Did chores in forenoon and got cow-feed in afternoon.  Paid freight of
$2.20 of feed.  Sleighing all gone.

6-Fine day.  Took milk to creamery and got buttermilk.  Did chores.

7-Fine day.  Did chores all day.  Findlay laid off.

8-Stormy day.  Went after 980 lbs. of hard coal for W.S. (Wesley Schlichter).  Took
milk-cans to hardware for repair.  Did chores rest of the day.

9-Stormy day.  Did chores all day.

10-Stormy day.  Took cream and milk to creamery and got buttermilk.  Did chores rest of
day.  Sold Pearl's calf to James Martus for $2.00, rec'd.

11-Did chores all day.  Robert came to visit us from Bay City.  Nice day.

12-Took cream and milk to creamery and got buttermilk and $1.05 worth of coke for
myself.  Nice day.

13-Took cream and milk to creamery and got buttermilk, two barrels for myself.  Did
chores rest of the time.  Dull and stormy day.

14-Stormy day.  Did chores in morning and evening.

15-Stormy day.  Did chores all day.  Robert went back to Bay City.

16-Stormy day.  Took cream and milk to creamery and got buttermilk.  Got Doll and
Queen shod on front feet.  Took the sorrel team and got them shod in afternoon.  Did
chores.

17-Fine day.  Took milk-tester to Cryppen's with big team.  Did chores rest of the time.

18-Dull day.  Took cream and milk to creamery and got buttermilk.  Drew straw in
afternoon and did chores.  Went for a drive at night.

19-Rainy day.  Got 790 lbs. of hard coal for W.S.(Wesley Schlichter) in afternoon.  Did
chores rest of day.

20-Dull day.  Took cream and milk to creamery and got buttermilk.  Did chores rest of the
day.

21-Nice day.  Did chores in morning and evening.  Went down to Mary K.

22-Holiday.  Nice day.  Came down after 1 bbl. of molasses and 1 bbl. of salt.  Did chores
rest of day.  Rec'd check of $25.

23-Rainy day.  Did chores all day.

24-Dull and stormy.  Took cream and milk to creamery and got buttermilk and bran for
myself.  Did chores.  Got $25 check cashed.

calves from Pontiac.

MARCH

1-Fine day.  Went to town in forenoon and did chores.  Ida went home to Gladwin.

2-Fine day.  Took cream and milk to creamery and got buttermilk.  Did chores rest of day.

3-Stormy day.  Took milk and cream to creamery and did chores.  Went to town in
evening.

4-Fine day.  Did chores all day.

5-Fine day.  Took milk to creamery and got buttermilk and coal.  Did chores rest of day.

6-Nice day.  Took cream and milk to creamery and did chores.  Went to town in evening.

7-Fine day.  Did chores all day.

8-Fine day.  Started to get things ready to move to Gladwin.  Fixed barnyard fence.  Put
barley meal in bags and did chores.

9-Fine day.  Took cream and milk to creamery and got buttermilk.  Put up oats in bags
and got sleigh and harrows out of shed.  Did chores.

10-Nice day.  Took milk and cream to creamery and got buttermilk.  Took Tom, Frank
and Goldie to Burnside.  Did chores.

11-Did chores all day.

12-This is the day of W. Schlichter's sale.  Worked all day.  Bought one cow.

13-Packed up my goods.  Uncle Frank (Getz) helped all day.

14-Was at Uncle Frank's and Uncle Jake's  all day.

15-Loaded car No. 308301.  Rec'd in cash $18.58 from W.S. (Wesley Schlichter) and
exchanged a Canadian check of $100 for a Brown City check of $100 with W. Schlichter.

16-Stormy day.  Helped Findlay (Deitweiler) do chores.  Loaded two cows and horse in
car and started for Gladwin.  

17-Fine day.  Left Bay City for Gladwin in forenoon.  Arrived at Gladwin and unloaded
car in afternoon.  Moved up to Mr. Wesley's.

18-Dull and stormy.  Unloaded furniture in forenoon and in afternoon W.S. (Wesley
Schlichter) and I went back to ranch and measured off house-lot.  Took order for shingles.  
My first day in the woods.
My 31st birthday.

19-Dull day.  Unloaded one load of furniture and helped Howard (Wesley) do chored for
S. Schlicter.

20-Fine day.  Howard (Wesley) and I went up to Highbanks with Sims' teams for a load of
hardwood.

21-Fine day.  Took care of team.  Went to Bert H. (Hutson) for supper and to church at
night.

22-Fine day.  Went to W. Wagar's for two loads of hay (3310 lbs.).  Paid 50 cents for
getting Tip's shoes.

23-Fine day.  Went to Gladwin and got one ton of corn-meal.

24-Dull day.  Went to ranch.  Cut brush and burned it.

25-Fine day.  Went to ranch.  Cut brush and burned it.

26-Fine day.  Went to ranch.  Cut brush and burned it.

27-Got lumber from Mr. Wesley for wagon-box.  In afternoon went to Gladwin and got
Tip's collar fixed (20 cents), axle grease (10 cents).

28-Dull day.  Home all day.

29-Nice day.  Mr. Wesley and I drew four loads of hemlock lumber (2116 ft.) back to
ranch.  Drew two loads of pine out to S.S. (Simeon Schlichter's).

30-Fine day.  Mr. Wesley and I drew four loads of hemlock lumber (2800 ft.) back to
ranch.  Drew 444 ft. of hemlock lumber to Mr. Wesley's.

31-Fine day.  Drew 1 load (400 ft.) of lumber to ranch and piled it up at ranch.

APRIL

1-Fine day.  Piled pine lumber at S.S. (Simeon Schlichter's) in forenoon and fixed
wagon-box.  In afternoon, Mr. Wesley and I drew two loads to ranch (942).

2-Fine day.  Drew 2 loads (879 ft.) of lumber to ranch.

3-Fine day.  Drew 1 load dry lumber (444 ft.) from Mr. Wesley and one load of green
lumber (316).

4-Fine day.  Went to Mr (Archie) Foutch.

5-Fine day.  Went to ranch.  Cut brush and burned it.

6-Fine day.  Cut brush all day.

7-Windy day.  Tried to cut brush.

8-Fine in forenoon and rain in afternoon.  Logged and burned it.

9-Stormy day.  Fixed wagon-box and piled a little lumber.

10-Fine day.  Went to ranch.  Logged all day.

11-Fine day.  Was home.  In afternoon, went for a drive.

12-Fine in forenoon and rain in afternoon.  Cut brush.

13-Fine day.  Went to town after W. Schlichter, got two pads for horse collars, $.50.

14-Fine day.  Wes. Schlichter and I went to ranch in forenoon and in afternoon took W.S.
to Wagarville and Gladwin.

15-Fine day.  Helped W. Kurz (?) unload furniture and brought a load to Wagarville.

16-Rained in morning.  Went to Gladwin for another load of household goods for Mr.
Kurz.

17-Fine day.  Went to High Banks and got tent and ladder in forenoon and in afternoon
went to ranch and put up tent and cut brush.

18-Rainy day.  Went to Bert Hutson's.

19-Rain in forenoon, fine in afternoon.  Went to Wagarville after load of hay, 1640 lbs. 
Got Mr. Ellis's tool chest.  Sold balance of 3 ton of hay to Mr. Kurz.

20-Nice day.  Mr. Elllis and I went to ranch.  Fixed culvert on Wells Road in forenoon. 
Laid foundation for house in afternoon.

21-Rainy day.  Came out home in evening.  Mr Ellis on ranch all day.

22-Nice day.  Ellis finished foundation of house and I got four pieces of 2x8 from Mr.
Wesley and took to ranch in forenoon, and built shed for horses.

23-Nice day.  Ellis and I raised frame of house.

24-Cloudy day.  Put up rafters and came home that night.

25-Fine day.  Simeon and Wesley and I went back to ranch and took dinner with the new
camp cook.

26-Nice day.  Mr. Ellis and I went back to ranch.  Took back some windows and started
to side up house.  Received a check of $30 from W. Schlichter.

27-Rained in morning but we worked all day at siding.

28-Nice day in forenoon.  Finished siding and started sheeting.  I went out after shingles to
Ammon's.

29-Stormy day.  Came out home in forenoon.

30-Stormy day.  Did chores all day.

MAY

1-Stormy day.  Mr. Ellis and I went to Gladwin and got finighing lumber for doors and
windows, five rolls of felt tar paper.  Got check cashed for $30.00.

2-Stormy day.  Went home for all day.

3-Nice day.  Mr. Ellis took lumber back to ranch for door and window frames and tar
paper for siding.  Started to shingle the house.  Paid out $14.60 for shingles for W.S.
(Wesley Schlichter).
-Nice day.  Shingled all day.

5-Fine day.  Mr. Ellis started to make window frames and I started to lay rough floor.

6-Dull day.  Took two bales of hay and got from Mr. Wesley three pine boards, 1x10x12'
long.  Paid out $.75 for W.S. (Wesley Schlichter) for ten bunches of lath for holding
tarpaper.  In afternoon came out to Ammon's and ordered 42 skantling(?). Got 15 peices
and took them back to ranch.

7-Nice day.  Trimmed and finished rough floor.  In afternoon came out to Ammon's Mill
for skantling but failed to get any.  Took 15 boards for gates back to ranch for S.
Schlichter.

8-Nice day.  Took doors and windows back to ranch and put on tarpaper.  Went to
Wagarville for W.S. (Wesley Schlichter).

9-Rainy day.  Took W.S. (Wesley Schlichter) back to ranch in afternoon.

10-Nice day.  Mr. Ellis and I went to ranch.  I put on tarpaper.  Mr. Ellis made window
frames.

11-Nice day.  Mr. W.S. (Wesley Schlichter) and I took two loads of hardwood flooring
back to ranch.  Made collar beams for house.

12-Nice day.  Laid floor.  Mr. Ellis finished putting in window frames and lights.  Drew
one load of lumber from mill to S.S. (Simeon Schlichter).

13-Nice day.  Laid match floor all day and Ellis put in doors and windows.  Paid F. Easlich
$10.00 on lumber for W.S. (Wesley Schlichter).

14-Laid hardwood floor.  Ellis hung door and steps.

15-Stormy day.  Went to (?) for lath at $3.00 per M.  Got $50.00 for W.S. (Wesley
Schlichter) cashed.  Got truss rod fixed on front axle of wagon, $.25.  Feeding horses,
$.25. Good two shoes on Prince and one on Tip.

16-Dull day.  Ida and I went back to ranch in afternoon.

17-Dull day.  Took lath back to ranch and got 36 skantling, 51 altogether, from Ammon's. 
Paid out $4.05 for W.S. (Wesley Schlichter).

18-Fine day.  Took Robert (Wesley?) back to ranch with me and laid floor all day.  Sowed
mixed seed on twenty.  Ellis hung doors downstairs.

19-Fine day.  Sowed oats for Sim. S. (Schlichter) by hand and Effie (Schlichter, Simeon's
daughter) drove the team.

20-Fine day.  Dragged for Sim. (Schlichter).

21-Fine day.  Dragged and plowed water-furrows and drilled peas in afternoon for Simeon
S. (Schlichter).  Exchanged 1100 lb. of corn for oats with Sim.

22-Fine day.  Went to Gladwin.  Got two thimbles for house, four hinges, 30 lbs. of
shingle-nails.  Went to ranch in afternoon.

23-Fine day.  Was home all day.

24-Fine day.  Mr. Ellis and I went back to ranch.  Lathed all day.  Paid F. Easlick the
balance ($5.02) for lumber for W.S. (Wesley Schlichter).

25-Fine day.  Ellis and I lathed all day.

26-Fine day.  Lathed all day.

27-Rainy day.  Lathed all day.  Took Mr. Ellis home.  Went to Wagarville and got 20 lbs.
of lath-nails.

28-Fine day.  Lathed all day.  Got 10 bunches of lathe from Mr. Hoenshell.

29-Fine day.  Came out from ranch in morning.  Helped Mr. Wesley sow peas half-day. 
Paid $3.75 to Robert W. (Wesley) for helping Mr. Ellis on house.
Viola Marion, our oldest girl, was born at half-past six o'clock a.m. Recorded by W.
Schlichter.

30-Fine day.  Home all day.

31-Fine day.  Went to Mr. Bollert's in forenoon for brick (180).  Got 240 from Mr.
Wesley.  In afternoon went to Gladwin for wood-pulp (26 sacks).

JUNE

1-Fine day.  Lathed all day.

2-Fine day.  Took load of brick to ranch.  Lathed in afternoon.

3-Fine day.  Took load of wood-pulp to ranch in forenoon.  Lathed in afternoon.  Paid out
$1.50 to Hoenshell for lath.

4-Rainy day.  Helped Sim. S. (Simeon Schlichter) plow in afternoon.

5-Took 30 sacks of wood-pulp back to ranch.

6-Home all day.

7-Went to Gladwin for mason.  Got 100 brick and got thimble for chinmey.  Paid out
$1.00 for brick.  Plastered one bedroom in afternoon.

8-Fine day.  Plastered upstairs.  I went to Gladwin in afternoon and got (?) of wood-pulp. 
Paid out 25 cents for gall cure.

9-Fine day.  Plastered all day.

10-Fine day.  Got plastered all day.

11-Fine day.  Got through plastering in forenoon.  Took Mr. Bittner to Gladwin.  Paid him
$14.10.  Paid 62 cents for horseshoes.  Got two screen doors.  Took 7 sacks of
wood-pulp back.

12-Fine day.  Went to ranch.  Took stove and three barrels and paid $5.25 to Mr. Ed.
Wilcox.

13-Rained all day.

14-Took wagon to Wagarville for repairs.  Went to Gladwin from Wagarville with W.S.
(Wesley Schlichter) and W.S. bought a plow.  In afternoon took plow back to ranch.  Got
a long-handled shovel from Wagarville Dairy Co.

15-Fine day.  Hung screen doors and made sashes for screens.  Cleaned house and came
out at night.

16-Fine day.  Tried to plow for potatoes but it was too wet.  Burned and cut brush. 
Brought out balance of hardwood flooring to Mr. Wesley's.

17-Cloudy day.  Went to Wagarville for wagon.  Stored log-sleigh in shed at Wagarville
and left cultivator at shop for repairs.  Loaded one slush-scraper, grind-stone, scale box on
wagon to take to ranch.  Paid out $3.50 for repairs on wagon.  Paid out $1.50 for
buggy-fills(?) for Simeon S.(Schlichter).  Went to ranch and cut brush.

18-Fine day.  Built store-house and porch at back door.

19-Fine day.  Got Mr. W. (Wesley) scales and took to Sim's (Simeon Schlichter's) and
weighed 54 bu. 28 lbs. of oats and put in bags.  In afternoon went to Gladwin with Ida.

20-Fine day.  Was at Foutch's all day.

21-Working for myself.  Took some furniture.  Plowed all day.

22-Fine day.  Plowed and dragged ground for potatoes all day.

23-Fine day.  Took potatoes to ranch and planted them.

24-Fine day.  Went to Grass Lake with Sim. (Simeon Schlichter) all day.

25-Fine day.  Planted potatoes at ranch all day.

26-Fine day.  Scrubbed upstairs all day.

27-Fine day.  Home all day.

28-Fine day.  Took a load of household goods to ranch.

29-Fine day.  Moved back on Schlichter Ranch.  Mr. Wesley helped with a load of
furniture.

30-Fine day.  Put up frames for clothes-hooks in house.  Helped to fix up house.

JULY

1-Fine day.  In the forenoon went to river to find a spring but did not succeed.  When I
returned I built two big gates and took them back to the cleared twenty and hung them. 
W. Schlichter came back in afternoon and showed me where to build the barn and also
where to put the well.

2-Fair in forenoon and stormy in the afternoon.  Ida and I went to Gladwin to the
Home-Coming.  Wesley paid $2.00 for a milk-can.

3-Fine day.  Lifted one of Simeon Schlichter's steers out of the creek of Jake Schlicter's
farm.  Went to Wagarville in forenoon and got horses shod, Tip all around and Prince on
front feet.  Helped Schlicter move goods in Wagarville store.  Went to Gladwin for a load
of freight for Wagarville store and put it in the storehouse.  Schlichter sent scythe,
whetstone, hand-rake, rip-saw, boxes and barrels two pieces of dressed lumber for
clothes-hook frames.  Brought back a one-horse cultivator.

4-Fine day.  Went to Wesley's after Ida and Allie Foutch.

5-Fine day.  Went out to Simeon Schlichter's for two bales of hay, three bags of
barley-chop, brush hook.  Got one little pig, two hens and 20 chickens, and calf from
Wesley's and returned to ranch.  Sim. and Wesley Schlichter were here for supper and left
orders for me to draw lumber and work on road.

6-Fine day.  Tried to fix the road going out to the Wells Road.  Worked at it all day.

7-Fine day.  Drew 3728 feet of hemlock inch planks and skantling as far as river hill. 
Drew two loads in to the ranch.

8-Fine day.  Hauled lumber all day.

9-Fine day.  Finished hauling lumber.  Simeon S. (Schlichter) came back to ranch with
barrel of salt.  Took three boards x12 ft. to make a salt trough.  Helped Simeon build a
gate on Meridian Line.

10-Rainy day.  In forenoon done carpenter and cut the rye in afternoon.

11-Rainy day.  Went out to Bert Hutson's after Ida and Allie.

12-Fine day.  Worked at the carpenter work in forenoon and put up rye in afternoon. 
Went to school meeting at night and was appointed Director.

13-Fine day.  Started to work on the new road with Mr. G. E. Wilcox.  Commenced work
at 7:30 a.m. and quit at 5:30 p.m.  Started brushing at S. (Simeon Schlichter's ?) gate and
went south to end of road and then went east.

14-Fine day.  Working on the new road.  Mr. Wilcox and I worked 10 hours.  Wilcox
worked 2 days free gratis on new road.

15-Rain in morning and fine in afternoon.  Ida took team and went Wagarville and got bill
of goods to the amount of $7.15.  In the forenoon, finished up the out-house and in the
afternoon cut brush on the new road.  Mr. Strocker moved in well supplies in the
afternoon.

16-Fine day.  Worked around house fixing up and also helped Mr. Strocker move in the
gasoline engine from Wells Road.  In the forenoon prepared ground for stable.  Mr.
Strocker started to work on the well.

17-Fine day.  Well-diggers worked on the well.  Messrs. W. Schlichter, Card and
Deitweiler came out from Wagarville to put up frame for stable.   They took dinner and
supper with us.  Brought the bug black mares and exchanged for Tip and Prince.  (?)
fetched out seven rolls of felt tarpaper roofing.

18-Fine day.  Mr. and Mrs. Wesley & Mr. and Mrs. B. Hutson came here for a visit.  Ida,
Allie, Viola and I drove out to Mr. Cann's for a can of water.

19-Fine day.  Drew water for the well-diggers in the morning.  Mr. Ed. Wilcox came to
cut brush north of house.  Cut until 8:30.  Mr. Ed. Edick came to survey lines.  Started on
north line and run west on my 120 a. and went on south corner of Wesley's 120 and run
line north on meridian and got thru at 12:00 o'clock.  In the afternoon, run north and south
line between the two eighties in Clement and finished at 4:00 o'clock Wilcox cut brush the
rest of the day north of the house.  Well-diggers came back at night.  I put tarpaper
roofing on the drive-shed.

20-Fine day.  Drillers worked all day and Mr. Wilcox cut brush all day north of house.  I
worked at putting tarpaper on house.  

21-Fine day.  Drillers broke down in forenoon and went to town for repairs.  I put down
tarpaper all day.

22-Dull day.  Rain at night.  Wilcox cut brush until 5:30.  Finished tarpapering and worked
on the stable.  Drillers came back in afternoon.

23-Fine day.  Well-diggers got water in the forenoon.  Went to S. Schlichter and got some
chop.

24-Fine day.  Helped well-diggers move out and gave Mr. Strohkick an order for 75% of
the amount ($129.20)  Wilcox worked in forenoon.  Left 11:30 a.m.

25-Fine day.  Home all day.  Effie (Schlichter), Olive (Schlichter), and Findley
(Deitweiler) were here.

1-Fine day.  Simeon Schlichter and Mr. David Hollenbeck from Brown City were here for
dinner.

2-Fine day.  Fixed up around stable and piled up all the loose lumber.

3-Fine day.  Wilcox and I worked on new road.  Put in nine hours.

4-Rain in forenoon.  Straightening up around house and piled lumber.  Wilcox and I went
to work on the new road in afternoon.  Put in five hours.  Simeon (Schlichter) and
Howard (Wesley) were here looking for cattle.

5-Fine day.  Went to picnic at Wagarville.  Got bill of Wagarville Dairy Co. to the amt. of
95 cents.

6-Fine day.  Wilcox and I worked on new road.  Finished brushing on south line to the
river and went back to chop brush on the meridian going northward.  W. Schlichter and
Prof. Jeffery were here for dinner and S. Schlichter and A. Swartz were here for supper. 
Got a $50 check for myself from W.S.

7-Fine day.  Wilcox and I finished brushing on the meridian line for the new road. 
Worked nine hours.  Paid Wilcox $4.95 for 3 1/2 days work.  Wesley S. (Schlichter) came
back and stayed all night.

here for a visit.

10-Fine day.  Gave Ed. Wilcox the job of building fence around my property and part of
Wesley's (Schlichter).  Queen sick and I doctored her.

to see what to do with her.  She choked all day.  Better tonight.

of Jim Wilcox's to McClure cemerery.  Effie and Orval (Schlichter) came back with a

1-Fine day.  Burned brush-heap in the morning and set one anchor post.  Drew water and
cleaned up around barn in afternoon.

2-Fine day.  Went to Wagarville for barb-wire and 1 keg of fence staples.  Got a bill of 55
cents from Wagarville Dairy Co.  Arrived home at 3:00 p.m. and started to level for the
fence.  Borrowed a pair of wire-pincers from Wagarville Dairy Co.

3-Fine day.  Leveled fence bed all day.  Rained in evening.

4-Fine day.  Dug hole for anchor post in forenoon and drew water and went to Hockaday
in afternoon.  Wesley S. (Schlichter) came here in evening.  Reverend Day and daughter
called.

5-Fine day.  Took Wesley back to Wagarville in the morning and stayed at Wesley's for
dinner.  Ida was alone all day.

6-Fine day.  Thomas Blake started to work for $1.00 a day and his board.  Howard

8-Thomas Blake came to work and I put him to digging anchor post-holes all day.  I went
to Wagarville and got five rolls of fence-wire, slush-scraper, Mr. Wm. Curr's fence-wire
stretchers.  Got two hameaps (?) charged to Wesley S. (Schlichter).  I got a bill of
$1.93 for myself.  Borrowed a centre-clevis (?) from Simeon S. (Schlichter).  Unloaded
wire on fence-line.  Tommy put in 10 1/2 hr. Board, 3 meals.

for anchor braces, a roll of felt roofing, (?), cans of axle-grease, 8 bolts 2 inches long, 1
small box of brass rivets, got about 200 lbs. of hay from Simeon (Schlichter) and the
balance of oats, 2 bags of sugar-beet pulp.  Thomas worked at digging anchor holes on
meridian.  Put in 11 hrs.  Board, 3 meals.

2-Nice day.  Finished getting teeth fixed.  Then went to W.S. (Schlichter) farm.  Fixed
water forks(?), packed 3 bbls. of apples in afternoon.  Went to Jake's in evening.  Frank
(Bergey) went out to Sim's (Schlichter) for a load of hardwood lumber.

3-Nice day.  Left Brown City for Gladwin.  Got home at the ranch about 11:30 p.m.

4-Rainy day.  Ida, Viola, Frank (Bergey) and I went to town to get contract arranged so
Ida could hold school office.  Got a bill from Wagarville Dairy Co. to the amt. of $1.90.

5-Cloudy day.  Home nearly all day alone.

6-Snowed hard all day.  Put stalls in horse stable.

7-Snowed hard all day.  Fixed stalls in horse stable.

8-Stormy day.  Ida and I went to Sugar Rapids in afternoon so Ida could take the oath of
office for director.  Hunted grasshoppers in forenoon.

9-Windy day.  Cut wood all day for myself.

10-Stormy day.  Cut wood all day for myself.

11-Nice day.  Went to Gladwin and got a new pair of sleighs.  Got a bill from Wagarville
Dairy Co. to the amt. of $2.35.  First sleighing.

12-Stormed all day.  Home all day and it was a long day for all of us.

13-Rained all day.  Went to Wagarville for oats. 27 bus.

14-Nice day.  Went to help Mr. Wesley buzz wood.

15-Cloudy and windy.  Went to Gladwin and paid the balance on the sleighs.  Got a bill
from Wagarville Dairy Co.

16-Nice day.  Went to Wagarville for a load of hay, bbl. of apples, and 25 chickens.  Got a
bill of 55 cents from Wagarville Dairy Co.

17-Nice day.  (Hector) Johnson and I hunted rabbits all day.  Got 1 a piece.  Pretty good
luck.

18-Nice day.  Split wood for myself all day. W.S.(Wesley Schlichter) came back in the
evening.  First school meeting with Ida director.

19-Mr.&Mrs. (Hector) Johnson, Howard W. (Wesley) and Grace Day were here for
dinner.

20-Snowed all day.  Fixed a few of the worse holes in the trail.

21-Nice day.  Went to Wagarville, took back egg crate and cot and got 6 bales of hay. 
Got a bill of $1.55 from Wagarville Dairy Co.

22-Fixed up trail in forenoon and went to Grace's (Day) Xmas exercises in afternoon.

23-Snowed part of the day.  Tried to get out logs.  Cut brush.

24-Cloudy and stormy.

25-Snowed all day.  Xmas day.  Went to Archie Foutch's for Xmas dinner and had a fine
time.

26-Snowed.  Was at Mr. Wesley's part of the day.

27-Nice day.  Ida was sick and I helped her wash.

28-Nice day.  Fixed pig-pen and worked at hen-stable.

29-Fine day.  Finished up hen-stable.

30-Nice in morning but stormed hard most of day.  Went to Wagarville for corn but had to
take middlings.  Got a bill of $6.23 from Wagarville Dairy Co.

31-Cloudy Day.  Put one window in hen-stable.  Went over to  (Hector) Johnson's to see
if he had got his bond.  He took it over here at night.  Chored rest of day.
