PORTSMOUTH  DIRECTORY 1871

The village of Portsmouth is a part and parcel of Bay City, united by streets, by interests, and by a street Railway, the latter plies between the two points every fifteen minutes, though as yet they are two separate corporations.

With in the past two years her population has increased at least one-fourth.  Many new improvements have been made, and avenues of business opened large additions have been added to the manufacture of salt by Mr. Albert Miller, by Messrs. John McGraw & Co., and others.  Several store buildings have been put up and occupied.  The one of Messrs. John McGraw & Co., near their works and great saw mill, is a large three story brick with two store rooms, and is finished off for offices, private rooms, families, etc.; besides this, the latter have added many new dwelling houses to the large number before owned.  A new hotel, the Crampton House, is now being finished off. Several brick and frame stores have been put up and occupied on First street; besides these there has been many fine residences put up throughout the place, and the sidewalks have been extended so that the appearance of Portsmouth surprises some of the old inhabitants who have been absent a year or two past.
